A vast majority of Metroidvania games take more from the Vania part than Metroid, especially the easy navigation. Metroid was spawned back in them ‘track your progress with notes’ days and is designed as such. Try the more action-y straightforwards fare like Symphony of the Night and its subsequent ‘sequels’ as well as Bunny Must Die. Cave Story is also nice, but I don’t see the big fan rave for it, I just liked the game but the fandom which enshrined it as the greatest game ever created kinda mystifies me. Oh, and try out Iji for a fun semi-pacifist twist. (The best ending is only attainable with 0 kills)
