Yeah, she said “mom and dad might own the farm, but I keep it running”, and she seems very focused about her job. Especially Haulder’s Boulder.
 
Maud going to college seems more like she’s pursuing her own rock based career, or maybe she wants to make her own Rock farm somewhere else. Its hard to know since Maud’s the sister who expresses the least amount of emotion compared to all three of her sisters.

Maybe Limestone is grumpy because she’s the oldest & might then not have the option of leaving the farm?

I had Maud pegged as the oldest because she was going off to college, and Limestone’s temper is usually associated with “middle kid syndrome”.

From what I’ve read, Limestone’s the oldest and Maud is second oldest. The fact Limestone mainly runs the farm helps cement that.

And then the “Nana Pinkie” mentioned in Too Many Pinkie Pies is where the pink gene came from (Pinkamena Rosemary Quartz? I don’t think very much delving has been done into possible names for her, but I sort of like the idea of having a Rose Quartz pun because of her daughter’s name).
 
Goodness, I’ve never realised how detailed my head cannon is for this lot is until now (it’s especially surprising considering that until this episode the only dialogue any of them besides Pinkie and Maud had was Cloudy’s one line in Cutie Mark Chronicles)

Well the idea of Limestone being a triplet has been around for a while, but also there’s the fact that she and Marble have matching names; in geology marble is known as metamorphosed limestone, with limestone being a rougher version (granted stonemasons use “marble” for similar looking stones that aren’t made that way, but I doubt their parents would make that mistake)

Actually that brings up something interesting, Equestria does seem to be matriarchal (which makes sense considering horse herds normally are and that’s what their society is built on) thus they are likely matrelinial. So it struck me as odd that Pinkie & her sisters got their last names from their father, though one possible explanation for that is the Pies are simply and old family and will ensure it continues by having their children carry on the name even if they normally wouldn’t.
 
In other words, under normal circumstances they would be the Quartz sisters, but because the Pies are an old family and place importance on continuing the name, the girls ended up with their Father’s family name, it would certainly be implied by the way her father mentioned the name of one of his own parents. On that basis perhaps Granny Pie was, in fact, Feldspar

In that first scenario, why does Maud have to be eldest instead of one of the triplets?

Personally I still prefer the idea that Maud is the eldest and the others are triplets, especially the potential humour of their parents wanting to have a second child and ending up with a third & fourth at the same time.
 
It’s also interesting to see how the personalities of her sisters have coloured some of Pinkie’s interactions like the way she treats Fluttershy in Griffon the Brush-off despite Fluttershy being older possibly being rooted in her dynamic with Marble.
 
Another interesting thing is that Limestone seems to be the only Pony Pinkie has truely been annoyed with and no matter what, Limestone is older than Pinkie; in Maud’s introductory episode Pinkie refers to Maud as her “Amazing Older Sister”. In other words, Limestone is considered the not-so-amazing older sister

It’s confirmed on Twitter that Limestone is the eldest child and Maud between her and Pinkie.
 
Marble is Pinkie’s twin, but younger by a few minutes.

Whether or not that’s a good reason, the episode’s writer did declare Limestone to be the oldest.

ALmost sure Limestone should be the oldes sister considering she runs the business now

That’s the same argument Big Jim and Confalone used, but I personally don’t find it a strong argument. Applejack is neither the eldest, but she does run the farm. Maud is busy with studying so she’s not able to run it at this moment, which makes Limestone the next candidate.

I figured Limestone might be the first born, since she’s so adamant about running the farm and stuff.
