Thanks to BadlyDrawnPony (who doesn’t draw badly at all) who helped me to get over my anxiety about drawing now and sharpieboss who left some nice and encouraging comments on one of my previous “drawings” not to mention the nice and helpful community around here I kinda decided to step out of my “comfort zone” and try drawing more out of my head and not just copy stuff. Sure it doesn’t look too nice but I feel more relaxed now. I was rather afraid and thought I will be messing up for good. ^^’
Happy AJ for those who like her. She is a nice and hard working pony after all. A real asset to her friends and community. Also she is just so darn cute.

Why are we encouraging you?
Well, my own reasons are, I can see you have potential to get much better, and you do listen to some advice.
And more art is always good.
The other reason for me is, I was running out of inspiration. Throwing a few ideas around between yourself, BlazingDazzlingDusk (whose art caught my attention because it’s so similar to my own), and Mrmildock (another budding artist with the potential to get much better), has given me a batch of new ideas for drawing.
That and the three of you tend to be fairly talkative here. Which is refreshing.
I have tried commenting on a couple of other new artist’s pictures here, but not got much response.
Would like to get a couple more in the group we seem to be forming here.
I see. I never really drew seriously before. I tried to copy some manga in high school but that’s all. I wanted to start earlier with pony art I just had life stuff in my way. So yeah in a way I have to say thanks for the pony and community to making me courageous enough to pick up the pencil.
Personally I would be going for digital painting when I can but manga esque (moncrome inked in) pictures are not too far from fancy either. Of course now I am struggling with the basics of anatomy. I am surprised how positive people are to my stuff. I don’t really know why.
I am excited to see more of your art, keep going and never give up. You have improved a lot since your first picture. :)
I restarted drawing after a hiatus of over 10 years, (used to draw a lot at school and in college). I guess I can thank the show for getting me back in to drawing again myself.
My first drawing was an attempt at the OC Safe Haven. (I liked her back story, and the threads over on 4chan made for entertaining reading). The results were…. horrendous, I think is the best way of putting it. After half a dozen drawings, I did that one of Colgate/minuette that I uploaded here.
The technique I started using was to draw a pencil sketch, go over it with a fine marker, rub out the original, then colour in the result with colouring pencils. When I started uploading here, the style was unusual, and my stuff stood out.
Nowadays, several newer artists here (BlazingDazzlingDusk amongst them), seem to have adopted the technique.
I will upload stuff today (my time). I am not giving up. To be honest I really feel like I beat my lack of confidence with art so far. I just need to learn to put effort into things. Hard work is a skill of it’s own.
I think I will try new characters and I got some nice reference materials that will help me with the anatomy. I practiced mark making from my shoulder in the last few days.
I will go on a walk to have my fitness then get back to drawing. ^^
Also yeah. I seem to be able to progress nicely. It’s a relief. I was worried that I’m way too old to start a month ago. Me and my irrational worries.
Maybe have a go at a different character? I’d avoid Pinkie just yet; that hair of hers is actually quite difficult to get right at first.
Maybe try Fluttershy. She’s not that hard to do. Just do the wings folded against her flanks and she’s relatively easy to draw.
Just picture a ‘heart’ shape around her face, to get the hair shape right.

A good target is 1-2 pictures a week.
It’s also interesting to see how you’re improving.
Just draw when the urge takes you. Otherwise it may become a chore, rather than a hobby/interest.

That is a good question. I never really look at the clock because I am kinda anxietying when starting to draw at this level and I get into the flow quick so I can’t really tell.
Maybe around 10-20 minutes.
