The Jedi are mostly long gone by that point, but it’s still good training overall to teach your combat personnel the fine art of No Get Hitsu; takin’ a whack from a big metal stick like Rey carried early in the movie might not get you the new nickname “Lefty”, but it would still suck. Still worth noting, though, that TR-8R was an ordinary riot control trooper with ordinary riot control gear, not some super-commando special forces badass. The First Order means business.

Also The Force™ is maaaaagic, man– lets you put enough English on your proton torpedoes, those suckers’ll pull a 90° turn at a thousand miles an hour.

Plus, even without that added background, we have to remember that this is a setting where, at one point in time, a single farmhand from one of the most backwater planets in the galaxy took down the two highest ranking leaders of a galactic civilization while wielding one of those. And then apparently set off to train more. Any new leader with even a modicum of common sense would probably make training with (and against) that kind of weapon part of the standard course for their soldiers.

@TexasUberAlles
I didn’t realize that. Top 1% huh? Lightsabers are supposed to be difficult to use (the blade creates gyroscopic motion that constantly pulls it to one side) so that explains why he’s only competent and not a freaking master. Props, Disney.

Finn picks up a lightsaber and is instantly competent with it

He may have been a sanitation specialist, but he was still a stormtrooper; every grunt in every army gets trained how to use a variety of weapons– so even if their MOS is 12K, they can still %$&# your $#!+ up with a toilet plunger– and it actually is canon that FN-2187 was really good at his job. There’s no editorial disconnect between the movies and the novels/comics with the new Star Wars canon the way there is with Friendship Is Magic canon, because everything that gets published is being tightly controlled to fit together in the same continuity instead of being hand-wavingly assumed to be part of some nebulously-connected set of parallel universes.

Honestly its mostly because the planet blows up in such a half-hearted manner and takes so long to actually do so. If it had been a sufficiently violent and energetic sun-splosion I would have accepted it at the time but when the big budget blockbuster action movie forgoes having a big, thematically appropriate kaboom for no apparent reason it makes you question it, and when you start questioning it the thin vernier of suspended belief rapidly crumbles away.

@Zebasiz
The only thing that really hurt my suspension of disbelief (at least while I was watching) was that Finn picks up a lightsaber and is instantly competent with it. I mean, he wasn’t good, but he didn’t lose any limbs either. Rey I can justify with the Force guiding her movements.

A large part of suspension of disbelief falls to the created universe remaining internally consistent.

They’ve provided [vague] explanations on Lightsabers: There’s some special crystals inside them that the energy is focused through.

FTL travel has been seen so often in Sci-fi that they don’t even really need to explain it as long as the ships appear to follow roughly the same rules regarding it.

In the case of things like destroying planets and absorbing the suns: In-universe it’s treated as something unusual and rare. As well as implying such a massive drain in resources [an entire Star]. AND something similar has been done repeatedly in the franchise before [Big giant Space Gun that blows planets up]. It begins to take you out of the fictional world when the plot itself is drawing so much attention to it “Look at how big and unbelievable that is!”

@Keith Mowz
In a world where sword made of light cut things like butter,where robots are near sentient and where spaceships goes at the spped of light,a space station absorbing the energy of a sun is too much
Yep,i said it before and i said it again,people are allergic to escapism and are turning more and more into the soulless caricature predicted by the “Please Get A Life Foundation” skit in Animaniacs
[…] And that’s what movies are all about: entertainment. But today, audiences are far more critical, have less imagination, and aren’t as willing to suspend their disbelief; and that is the death of cinema.
-James Rolfe
I’m sure there some plot holes in Star Wars,after all if you hit a thing hard enough it break but this plot point here…nah,it make as much sense as a space station blowing planets up and having an obvious weak point like in video games

@Darth Sonic
I wonder if the power source of the new cannon is something the new canon explains in novels or comics; it could be that hypermatter reactors require components that are difficult or impossible to obtain without New Republic support– like the scarcity of enriched uranium and gas centrifuge parts prevent most countries from having nuclear reactors IRL– or that there was some specific quality of the solar matter/energy being drawn from the star that allowed The Weapon to function the way it did, like the exotic cosmic radiation that Death Rays were based on in Master Of Orion.

@Keith Mowz
It didn’t even make much sense as a power source, seeing as the Death Stars already used Hypermatter Reactors that produced 12 times as much energy as any single star. Well, in the old canon at least, though science says it kinda needs that sort of energy in order to annihilate a planet like that.

Oh god the fucking Starkiller.

So many goddamn ways it makes no fucking sense. And it would have been an easy goddamn fix; just don’t have it use the entire fucking star. Siphoning off of it I can suspend my disbelief for. Cramming an entire star into a planet with no repercussions whatsoever and then it casually turning back into a regular star when the planet blows up is fourteen fruity flavors of bullshit that knowing even the basics of astronomy rips me right the fuck out of the moment and doesn’t even look cool.
