Personally, after the wonderfully fun FF #12 (Pinkie Pie and Twilight), I would never ascribe to Barbara Randall Kesel a “complete lack of writing talent”.

No offense but the “Never heard of this writer before.” line sounds a little to dismissive of her career. To tell the truth, I might not have read any of her works but mismatches between writers and properties have happened before and will still happen (chris claremont is great at x-men but so-so at fantastic four).

I love the comics, but this was awful. Even with one of the villains being my OC, it was awful.
 
A plan to amputate wings and then eat them to gain power. Possibly the darkest the comics have ever gotten, and on 3 lame villains like these, it’s certainly accidental. Quite a shame, I was hyped up for some real sick villains.  
And then Twilight having plenty of chances to use this spell on them, instead uses it once they’re cowering in fear. What kind of hero waits until they’ve won to strike?  
On top of that, she’s decided that she’s the law. That she has the right to declare others guilty, and choose any punishment she wants. That is not what heroes do. Anti-heroes maybe. Twilight’s not an anti-hero though so this is just ludicrous!
 
The mind-fusion thing was super cool, I even liked the overly grimdark plot. But no thought was put into this story at all. And it’s not like the setting or anything was against them. It was just pure ineptitude. Complete lack of writing talent.
 
Writer: Barbara Randall Kesel. Never heard of this writer before. Let’s see… 34 years of experience writing comics with female characters?! How sad. I expect many people at IDW were disappointed with this too. I guess some people just lose their touch over time.
