And that’s why mordschlag/mordhau came to be used: since the sword blades did nothing, the knights just grabbed their swords by the blades and beat the opponents with the hilts and crossguards.
Yeah, you’d probably have to have armor on the order of a of tank’s if you wanted to just stop blows completely. Probably better to try for deflections for mobility’s sake.
that’s basically the entire idea behind all plate armor. They’re not trying to stop the hits, they’re trying to deflect them off to the side.
and that’s why the universal counter to plate armor is blunt weapons! you can’t deflect a big fracking hammer/mace the way you can a sword!
So the round shape makes it harder to penetrate? I can buy that logic.
Now that I think about it, having an air gap between the armor and the user might also reduce the chances of a penetrating hit actually harming the wearer, too.
According to the Wikia;
“Outside of Catarina, it is often ridiculed for their onion-like shape, infuriating the proud knights, but the masterfully forged curved design makes it very effective for parrying.”
That’s some interesting looking armor; I was thinking she was wearing some sort of ribbed sweater. What’s the rationale behind shaping it that way?
