It’s not that there’s zero rational to being afraid (because there is always rational to being afraid of a species of which some members could kill you), it’s that the intensity of the fear is much more intense than it should be, often to the point of being crippling.

Arachnophobia and Thanatophobia wouldn’t be a thing if that were true. What makes a phobia a phobia isn’t that there is zero rational reason to be afraid of something, but rather that your fear is completely arbitrary in its activation and instinctual.
It’s not a phobia if it’s rational.
Maybe it’s due to the fact that they’re currently operating under Queen Chrysalis’ coordination?

If I were to surmise a pattern since Boast Busters, she’s more afraid of non-performance related danger than the average pony. I wouldn’t say cowardly, but Sugarcoat would. Love that ironic name.
