One possible reason for why Princess Cadance is referred to as such rather than Empress Cadance could be similar to how Queen Victoria was styled and titled after the Empire of India was declared as a distinct but integrated part of the British realm, since the part of Victoria’s title declaring her Queenship over the UK and Ireland holds precedence over her title as Empress of India, essentially making her formally recognized as Her Majesty Queen Victoria.

That said, it does seem pretty plausible that she’s formally recognized as a princess simply so she would stand equal with the Royal Sisters, and they in turn would be equal to Cadance.

I think of the Crystal Empire as a previously independent state that became integrated after the destruction of Sombra and placing Cadance on the throne.

A combination of the C.E. being a satellite/semi-independent “province” of Equestria and it being a separate state in personal union with Equestria seems like the most workable answer in mind. It’s not the kind of thing the show’s going to spend time addressing in detail, so we can headcanon pretty freely here!

@Yet_One_More_Idiot

I think at least part of the reasoning behind them both being princesses was so that neither would stand above the other. That said, I don’t think Equestria was ever explicitly called a kingdom, so we might as well just say that it’s officially a principality.

As for Cadance… well, I suppose we have to chalk that one to Equestrian royal titles working very oddly indeed, I fear :P Thank goodness for the canon at least having King Thorax (is that his official in-show title?) and Queen Novo, I say!

On an unrelated note, am I the only baffled at how the Equestrian railway system is arranged? I mean, first we have a random, lonely railway station leading to the middle of the frozen hind end of nowhere where the Crystal Empire conveniently happened to reappear (unless the Equestrian railway system is a lot older than ours and that station was built before the C.E. vanished, who even knows?), but the seeming insistence on that pattern of making the rails radiate out from Canterlot seems… impractical. Just look at Tall Tale and Vanhoover – you’d need to go half the width of Equestria one way to Canterlot and then the same distance back to go from one to the other! You’d be making the same distance you’d need to literally cross the nation to move between two neighboring cities!

And let’s be honest…Equestria is a kingdom, so Celestia (as well as Luna?) should be a Queen.

And the Crystal Empire, while seemingly a satellite state of Equestria, is an Empire. So surely Cadance should be an Empress? :)

  1. The Crystal Empire is part of Equestria, and not an independent nation.
That’s the most obvious explanation, I’ll grant, but I can see why one might argue otherwise. I always saw it as one of those situations where two countries are technically independent but for all intents and purposes are the same country. Like Austria and Spain in the fifteen hundreds – they were separate nations by all formal and legal standards, but their respective monarchies were both held by members of the House of Habsburg, so their monarchs would have been fairly close relatives. Politically, they acted as part of what was essentially a single nation, the Habsburg dominions.

In terms of succession, it’s a “Personal Union”, where a monarch holds dominion over two states without integrating one into the other, usually due to differences in law, culture, or national interests that would not be so easily set to the monarch’s home state within a few years, such as between the Kingdom of Castille and the Kingdom of Aragón, or what you presented with Habsburg Spain and Austria. Or the Empire could be something of a vassal state or a march of Equestria, wherein it’s under the near-total control of Equestria yet is unintegrated for whatever reasons. Both seem unlikely due to Cadance having, what appears to be, de facto control over The Crystal Empire and its government, and seemingly being considered a distinct and separate monarch from Celestia and Luna.

However, it seems to me that The Crystal Empire is something like a satellite state of Equestria; Independent, but greatly within the political/economic influence of Equestria. Or maybe the relationship between the two countries is something like the relationship between the USA and the UK.

But really, since we really have no clue how either of their respective governments work and we most likely will never get an episode/comic/book to get into the nitty-gritty of Equestrian government’s functions, we don’t have much of a clue what they are in political relation to eachother beyond the characters’ interactions , maybe the Empire is fully integrated into Equestria but given some amount of autonomy and unique titles for those who govern them, who knows?

Or like most of Europe c. 1900 - the majority of European rulers around that time were grandchildren, great-grandchildren, or married to a grandchild or great-grandchild, of Queen Victoria. :)

So, the Crystal Empire is “officially” a sovereign nation in its own right, but in practice its ruler is Celestia’s niece (and her husband is the brother of another Equestrian princess).

  1. Arimaspi Territory and the Badlands are not countries, they are also part of Equestria.

They are?

  1. Is the Buffalo territory really relevant anymore?

Why wouldn’t it be? It’s established canon that the buffalo live there and rule their own affairs. There’s been nothing to contradict that – the simple fact that it hasn’t been referenced in a good long while doesn’t make it any less canon.

There are some inaccuracies here.

I love the fact that the (possible) geopolitical boundaries of the various nations are included in this map, as it just makes their world a little bit more plausible…

That, and it sparks up the part of me that loves to think of how these worlds actually work, right down to the most minute details.

It’s a really good map ^^ I like it.
Buut, I don’t remember what Arimaspi is…
And why are their territories so big? They are just animals…
PS: And these nameless territories hurt a little…
