lol I remember. They are the bangs of doom from her brainwashing/timeline disrupting evil days. Honestly, I was always impressed how different her appearance is before and after her conversion when the only thing that changes is the hair.  
The comic uses it to an excellent effect.

‘Five, Six, Grab your crucifix’ wouldn’t make much sense here. Since she’s a sort-of Communist maybe someone can come up with a rhyme for ‘Grab your copy of Atlas Shrugged’.
Ugh, Atlas Shrugged? Maybe we can just let ourselves be knifed instead?
 
Fair enough. Though ya could’ve changed it to something else that rhymed with six.

Best part is how her mane goes back to old evil style in half the panels!
 
And her cutie mark turns into an equality mark in the panel wherein she’s holding the knives.

*Starlight gets up from her chair and trots over to the bed as Twilight closes her eyes and wipers in fear. Starlight then places her hoof on Twilight’s cheek and strokes it gently as she look to her mentor with a deadpan expression.
 
Starlight: “You’re very precious to me.”
