We learned in “The Crystalling” that Sunburst was chosen as baby Flurry Heart’s “crystaller”, which appears to be the Crystal Empire’s version of a godfather. Back in the day, godfathers were family friends chosen to supervise a child’s religious education, which in Equestrian terms would probably translate to Sunburst being charged with teaching Flurry Heart “the magic of friendship” or some such. In this pic Sunburst is wearing some kind of priest or monk’s robe, supporting the religious connection.
 
So, what we have here is the young Princess Flurry Heart crushing on her monk/godfather/religious tutor Sunburst. Not surprising Shining Armor’s seeing red, and poor Sunburst is sweating bullets.

Specifically - Protestants tend to believe in the “priesthood of all believers”. All Christians are priests in the general Protestant view. The priest in the Catholic sense is a mediator, an intermediary between God and mortal. As a Protestant you’ve probably gathered that’s really not compatible with the whole “personal relationship with Jesus” thing.
 
That being said, a couple Protestant denominations do use the term “priest” for their clergy - Lutherans outside the US, for example. Anglicans/Episcopalians have also been using the term for at least a generation now. But their beliefs are still Protestant, and said clergy are treated in the same way as Protestant pastors.
