Oh man– I sold a badge of this to Gameleon from Equestria Daily at Nightmare Nights Dallas this year because someone in the hallway had just accused him of trying to appropriate Dutch culture.

He is Dutch. He flew in from The Actual Netherlands.

Cassocks have a specific meaning but if someone wants to dress as a priest on Halloween, who cares? If you tried to officiate at a Church mass you’d be in shit, but if I wore a headdress and tried to impersonate a tribal elder, no one would care about the headdress, they’d focus on the legal fraud and theft.

What Euro-American clothes are simultaneously “offensive, dehumanizing stereotypes” and “important in our culture”?
Background Pony #61CA
It’s an offensive, dehumanizing stereotype. Headdresses are important in Native culture.

You know, context is sort-of everything. In his case, that headdress has a SPECIFIC meaning to a culture that is LIVING right next to him. Not as “we had ancestors that had a culture like this” but a “we have this culture NOW”.

Also, read the full after-message post:

Headdress has a specific meaning for us, and it’s not for you. I mean, if you wanted to marry into the tribe or whatever, we could maybe work something out, but even then to be allowed to wear that you’d have to kill, like, a dozen guys, and one of them would have to be my dad, so cut it out, okay?”

In other words, if I came in to your house, kneeled in front of your girlfriend/wife while offering a gold ring in a box as a birthday gift, you’d be mad too for misinterpreting culture.

Stuff means stuff. Just because it is in another culture does not mean it is any more or less stupid than our own traditions or rituals.

I hate how the internet turned a clumsy-but-meaningful take against racist stereotyping and turned it into an unfunny joke.

In my experience, when you visit a foreign country, they tend to appreciate it when you try wearing their traditional outfits, try speaking their language, try their food, etc.

“We’re a culture, not a costume”

Tell that to trekkies, bronies, whovians, Americans-who-cosplay-Brits etc. etc.

Stupid campaign is stupid.
