No, PonyPon, Daring-Do and the others are quite correct. Psychological studies (such as the famous Robbers Cave Experiment) and others have confirmed that (most) people are innately conditioned to cooperate in the face of adversity or any other challenge, even those that are not survival related, and that conflicting groups can rapidly come together when it is advantageous to do so. You can run into problems, such at the tragedy of the commons, but the general assessment that adversity (and an identifiable goal) encourages mutualism is largely borne out by empirical study. Even if that “mutualism” is in the form of gangs looting during an emergency, it is often observed that conflict in fact decreases between these groups, as they attempt to mutually take advantage of the situation. So even bad behavior can be mutualistic.

Simply saying “but Trump!” and “but Brexit!” means nothing compared to actual studies done on the topic of human socialization and crisis management. This is akin to a Climate Change Denier saying “it’s so cold outside today! So much for that Global Warming, right, huh huh?” Anecdotes are useless as evidence. Trying to pass off those things as evidence is even worse than just an anecdote.

And yes, most zombie scenarios are ridiculous in both premise and execution, reliant on contrived back-stabs and exaggerated drama to function as mainstream entertainment.

People are more than willing to throw other people under the bus if it means that things will be better for them. That’s why people are opposed to Obamacare, despite the fact that every other first world nation has free healthcare for all it’s citizens.

People in times of crisis will more often than not band together rather than mindlessly backstabbing each other for no reason. because cooperation is BETTER for survival, and people know this. People may be douches but they’ll still band together to survive simply because that’s how we’re wired: we’re a social species.

hell, this is why the “Evil army” concept in zombie movies is so mind numbingly dumb; Even if its a military dictatorship coming in, they’re NOT going to devour you alive while zombies WILL, so its still a net gain to throw in with the fascists rather than pointlessly rebelling because “mah freedom”
