That makes you a very sane person. Or you’ve been living under a rock since, I dunno, S01E01?
Some started shipping them as soon as Celestia appeared on screen…

(…) and is still afraid of disappointing Celestia (and of not living up to her title).

This right here is one of the major reasons not to ship these two. It’d be an endless cycle of Twilight trying to live up to expectations that she herself set up to please Celestia.

There is an inherent problem with character developement which is that characters are defined by their flaws but if a character learns a lesson they are expected to have learned that lesson and not make the same mistake twice or a similar one. A character like Twilight can only learn so many lessons without in a scenario having to be either perfect or forgetting about previous ones. That goes for power, too. If you allow a character to get more power which makes them more awesome it becomes harder to find an obstacle for them so you may need to nerf them in certain scenarios which makes them much less awesome. Many shows like the simpsons therefor try to have as little actual character developement as possible but present more characters and more interesting ways they can interact with each other. Of course, when Ned Flanders wife died that change was permanent due to how drastic it was but it didn’t change much. The ascension was kind of like this but with character developement.

Other than the storylines directly impacted by her crowning (such as her being self-conscious about not living up to her title), I’d argue that none of her character development was specifically linked to it. The Twilight in Magic Duel has developed significantly from the Twilight in Winter Wrap Up, and the Twilight in The Cutie Re-Mark is noticeably different than the Twilight in Princess Twilight Sparkle. Even if she never ascended, her character would still be going in the same direction in general, and putting the cause as her ascension alone is kind of misleading.

As for Starlight’s story purpose, eh, I’d say it’s different. Twilight’s story purpose in seasons 1 and 2 was to learn friendship lessons and indirectly teach them to the (assumed to be young) viewers. That changed after that, and wasn’t really a focus in seasons 3-5. Starlight’s story purpose is more that of watching the rehabilitation of a pony who had very damaged views on friendship and social interaction, as a way of seeing a mentor and student relationship from the other side, and as a way to bring characters like Trixie and Maud into second-string character status for further storylines. I don’t think they’re trying to teach friendship to viewers through her like they were with Twilight.

I didn’t mean Starlight behaved like her in terms of personality but in terms of story drive.
@Fwelin
@Fwelin
She’s a bit less sarcastic, more responsible, and doesn’t create magical disasters.

That’s one example of where Glimmy comes in who has all these traits.

Everything is character developement, tho. I meant her character now has different implications due to the specific developement she went through and can be seen as different due to the extend of those developements. Like a Homer Simpson who became skinny after deciding to not drink so much beer and eat so much. Don’t take it too seriously. It was just my answer to the comment saying (or implying) she just grew wings and nothing else changed.

@Fwelin
Addendum because I missed the editing time limit:

Even if she doesn’t act exactly as she did in the first couple seasons, she’s still Twilight. She still loves books, science, and magic, sometimes gets annoyed at the antics of her friends, values all her friendships, and is still afraid of disappointing Celestia (and of not living up to her title). She’s a bit less sarcastic, more responsible, and doesn’t create magical disasters nearly as often anymore, but that’s a part of her development, in both character and ability. If you preferred the snarkier or more disaster-prone Twilight of before, I can understand that, but it doesn’t mean that her character is worse now.

Well, it’s actually a whole lot more than just wings. Part of a character is the conflict they go through and the limitations they have. Twilight not only got wings but also stopped being Celestia’s student. She had that whole thing about trying to answer Celestia’s expectations and occasional magic abuse and some other quirks of behaviour. Being able to fly also removed some of the potential conflict as it made certain situations impossible. And they supposedly gave her this alicorn magic that’s supposed to make her really powerful but they basically have to nerf her a lot or downplay her abilities. In addition to that she’s also more stereotypical for the show now as princess of friendship while unicorn Twilight was more interesting due to her skeptical nature and potential of character developement in other ways which make her more interesting for fanfictions or in general. Despite Twilight acting somewhat similarily she is essentially a different character with different implications now and Glimmer was created by the writers to fill that void more or less which leads to other problems in writing. I don’t want to trigger an argument about alicorn Twilight and it’s ok if you don’t mind. I am just saying that it’s more than just wings.

Starlight isn’t even close in personality to what Twilight was or ever has been. She was introduced as an interesting look into mental problems (and I’m talking about REAL mental problems, not just neurosis) in ponies, as a way to give some of the mid-tier characters new screentime and new relationships, and as a new challenge for Twilight, being a teacher and mentor, much like Celestia.

Also, you have that backwards; Twilight acts differently than she did in older seasons due to character development, but that doesn’t make her a different character any more than real life people changing makes them different people.

I don’t mind Twilight being an alicorn. It’s just a pair of wings.

@Background Pony #0441
Yeah that was iffy. And then they dared to make Twilight the damsel in distress along with everypony. That’s a big no-no for me considering Twilight is the main protagonist

Plus the abomination Thorax and Antichrist baby Flurry.

Yeah, dropped like hot coals.

Magical Socialist Glimglam sounded interesting to me tbh. The problem is that a tyrranical dictator who attempted to destroy life as we know it was essentially rewarded by being loosely tutored in capita - I mean friendship by the newly crowned princess of…whatever she’s the princess of.

Also Flurry….and how the demon child destroyed the crystal heart. And like…everything else related to the nu-alicorns.

I miss when Twilight was a unicorn but I admit that the role flipping between teacher and student makes this pretty great

Do note that I gave a compliment first. I don’t diss the work, I diss the direction the work took. :P

@Background Pony #1BCB
Stopped caring for the show two seasons ago, once they introduced Magical Socialist Starlight.
And nothing is set in stone in the show anyways, what with each and every writer doing something else.

Sides, Celly is Discord’s. You know she wants him. But she’s too noble and let’s Fluttershy have him. ;)

Sat here waiting for a kiss or nuzzle way too long before realizing none would happen. Damn you smooth loops.

Meh, twiluna got shot down pretty good in the show recently. We know she likes Celestia more, enough for her to acknowledge her own bias.

Two people probably put a lot of work and effort into this, perhaps just look at twiluna stuff instead of complaining that a twilestia piece isn’t twiluna???

This is really, really, really cute and well-made buuuut…

It’d still prefer if it was Luna, not Celestia.
