A tenor trumpet would be more like a valve trombone. Flugels are still soprano instruments, although the deeper mouthpiece allows playing extended low ranges like on actual low brass, which, combined with a similar high range to the trumpet, makes it one of the most versatile instruments there is. Actual flugelhorns sound more like a halfway point between the trumpet and the mellophone.

Ponyfodder: nah, the flugelhorn is a legit instrument, kind of like a tenor trumpet. It has a really, really mellow and nice sound.

It’s hard to play an instrument made of crystal.

And I don’t think the Flugelhorn was limited to just the Crystal Kingdom; it could’ve been around in other parts of the world during the time Pinkie’s been alive.
Drasvin

Pinkie has probably practiced with all those various instruments. That was the first time she had ever seen a Frugalhorn. At the end of the premier she was actually quite good with it.
