Isn’t Constaninople a Roman city? That would make Tuesday unlucky in Italy, right?

No.

To make a long and winding history short, the city on Constantinople was founded by Greek settlers from the city-state of Megara, they named the city Byzantium. On that site was once the Thracian city of Lygos, but it had been long abandoned when the Greeks arrived to found Byzantium in 657 BCE. The city pre-dates Roman rule in the region.

Interestingly, Byzantium was razed by the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus in a hissy fit over how the city supported a rival contender for Emperor and so he renamed the city after his son Antoninus; it became Augusta Antonina. Antoninus would later become Emperor Caracalla. But after his assassination the city reverted to Byzantium.

Referring to Byzantium as Constantinople didn’t begin until Emperor Constantine I moved the Roman capital to Byzantium and reconstituted the city in his image. By this point the Empire effectively became split between the old West and the new east or Nova Roma. And while the Eastern or Byzantine Empire would maintain many old Latin traditions the lingua franca would turn to Greek over Roman Latin, even while the Latin west remained.

For many nostalgic Greeks, Constantinople/Byzantium/Istanbul is their city. But that is all old meme.

Unfun fact: Tuesdays are considered unlucky in Greece (it’s the day that Constantinople fell in 1453)

But what if people don’t live by a typical schedule like this? I don’t get this. I have to work weekends so wouldn’t the weekday day be a yay day instead?
