I think SMGalaxy2’s creative level design, and higher challenge actually helped set it apart from the first game, and was just as good, or possibly better. 3D Land & World were still pretty good, (multiplayer in “World” was especially fun) more of a “2D Mario feel in 3D” which I felt was a nice change of pace from the usual “hunt down items in a large open 3D world” gameplay. I do kinda miss that too, and apparently Odyssey is bringing that exploration back, while staying true to the series’ platformer roots.
I guess you grew up with Mario 64, & Sunshine which is why you don’t like the games that focus on action/platforming like the older/newer 2D games, and prefer 3D exploration.
At least the Mario series usually regulates one 3D game, and one sidescroller per console/system, so I don’t feel they go as overboard with the sequels/rehashes as other game franchises. They even cut down on the Mario Party games.

I love both series too (more Sonic than Mario imo). It just sucks with the stupid double standard that I see with Sonic and Mario. Very unfair and biased.
The fact it didn’t do much different from the first title was a big reason that I didn’t bother with the game.
Similar to Super Mario Galaxy 2, it just feels like a simple expansion of the first without being it’s own entity.
Kinda took me out of the NSMB series in general. I didn’t get NSMB Wii, NSMB U or NSL U. Even the 3D Land and World
games felt pretty underwhelming compared to say Sunshine(which I find criminally underrated). Hopefully Odyssey will
bring Mario back to his full potential so it can give me a good reason to get a Switch, along with Xenoblade 2,

I also like those games, even when I’m just playing single player. My personal favorite is 3. :3
I like those games, (or at least the ones I played) despite what that lame meme claims, me & my friends always got along, and had fun playing it.

I guess it is ironic those who critique Sonic are fine with Mario doing the same things. (I love both series personally though.)
Like those who hate on Sonic characters who look similar to Sonic, but love characters like Rosalina. (Who looks kinda like Peach.)
I liked New SMB2. It was better then the original DS one IMO. Plus I liked the return of the raccoon Mario, and Reznors. Though, I admit, it didn’t do too much new, and should’ve given multiplayer separate screens. Plus the coin gimmick could’ve been used for something more, and made it to easy to get 1ups.
After reading that post, I have to admit that Sega’s resistance on trying new ideas and changing the formula up and giving an actually interesting story has gotten me a bit peeved for a while now(it’s something I complained about with Mario after Super Mario Galaxy, but hopefully Odyssey can restore my passion for Mario platforming). What angers me more is the resistance from gamers and the fanbase itself when Sonic makes any sort of small change from the norm. “Remixing US Sonic CD song instead of JP/PAL for the 10th time? Using playable characters other than Sonic, Tails or Knuckles? Putting in new gameplay mechanic? Bickering intensifies”. People just became so freakin’ complacent with the norms now, that anything new might be too much for them to handle and adapt to. Except for Mario, ‘cause Mario can’t do anything wrong Paper Mario Sticker Star and New Super Mario Bros 2

Well, looking at the curreent score of the image, you have a big point.
And speaking about the piece of software itself, yes, it’s an unoriginal rehash of S3&K, but this doesn’t detract from the overall quality.
I mean, today I’m buying Everybody’s Golf 4 (AKA Hot Shots Golf 4): I’m not a sucker for original things except for my love of Goat Simulator. And I’m stretching a lot the concept of “originality”, here.
my opinion on Sonic Mania in a nutshell.
Actually, it’s got alot of new levels, and apparently even the remake levels are pretty new.
Sonic Mania is a rehash of Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Personally, I don’t think any new Sonic the Hedgehog game will quiet the haters…
You tell me. I’ve bought it and it’s awesome! 23 years without enjoying like this with a Sonic game.
