Some were “fundies”. Many of them were the kind of wide-eyed progressives who are convinced that as soon as we force society to do ‘X’, utopia will spontaneously come into existence overnight.
 
There was plenty of blame to spread around.

The satire in this comic becomes a bit less clever when and if you do some reading on what saloons were like before Prohibition. Many of them were more like crack houses. It wasn’t just or even primarily for reasons of prudery that most people would go blocks out of the way to avoid saloons in late 19th and early 20th century America, it was so you wouldn’t be mugged or maybe just assaulted and killed by the regulars.
 
The Anti-Saloon League and WCTU had a point, but they took it way too far. Not to mention that after their victory, when it became obvious that crime and vice and poverty had not disappeared overnight and all the drunks and stew-keepers weren’t spending all their time attending church and thinking noble thoughts, both groups ended up tearing themselves apart in desperate efforts to find the ‘less devoted’ who were the ‘real source of the problem’.

That’s what happens when you ban something’s that something become commonplace. People can’t handle having something taken away and so become desperate to get it back.

Well aside from Twilight, the town of ponyville has enough collective brain cells to form a synapse.

I’m very much against things like Prohibition but blaming Temperance for this is ludicrous. Yes she got the town to ban sugar; she did not force these ponies to behave like fools and go hog wild on the stuff.

Well, Temperance changed her tune when she saw her sugar ban was causing only harm and no good. Carrie died before the 18th Amendment.

I had not known that but even still, how does the ending of this parody related to the inspiration? She still should have held the belief that sugar was bad, and tried to ban it.

The entire comic is a satire on the Prohibition and Temperance movements, with sugar being a stand-in for alcohol. Seriously, even the groups name have the same ASL acronym (Anti Saloon League and Anti Sugar League).
 
Temperance (the pony) is a ponified Carrie Nation, who had her marriage ruined thanks to alcohol and thus dedicated her life to the banning of the stuff.
 
A lot of the humor or actions is gonna go over your head if you don’t know the thing it’s parodying.

I get that, but seeing how her view on sugar was already distorted, I could only see their actions, whether caused by her or not being more incentive for her to continue her campaign. Because she could argue, they may always act this way, especially if she is new in town, or that this is what sugar leads too. I just get the vibe that she is the kind of person/pony who would blame the substance and not the person.

I am not fully understanding the comic, from what I was able to read on here, that Grey old pony that hates sweets, had a bad experience with sweets and tries to ban sugar, and then the citizens of Ponyville, somehow become sugar crazed zombies and the grey pony realizes through Twilight that she did something wrong and caused this chaos. I don’t get it, would the way they are acting, prove her point? Wouldn’t it make her even more determined to get rid of sugar, seeing the towns folk going crazy like this.

Is this about sugar?
