There is more than enough material for at least 12 seasons; it wouldn´t make sense to stop at 9.

The only sure things in life are death and taxes. Season 9 might not be the end of FiM, and you’ll never truely know until the time comes. Hasbro has plenty of time to change things from what the leaks were saying, if they are so inclined.
