I agree wholeheartedly, I miss the days when we used to have this… The days before people gutted education funds…
 
I noticed a significant deterioration of our education system by 11th grade.
 
Great Teachers quitting, being fired… standing awkwardly in the halls…
 
Teachers that were hired but all we did in class was watch Netflix shows…
 
The only good ones left are probably already gone, what a waste.

It’s challenging to be a low-affect teacher, but it can be done. The best practice to keep students engaged in that case is to involve students in classroom participation. Low affect plus lecture will have students snoozing at their desks.
 
To deliver large chunks of material in such a situation, flip the class: assign students to study material outside of class and come prepared with practice activities. Maud’s choice of a field trip every now and then is a great idea for a geology class.
