At this point, I’m pretty sure the writers have shelved the question of “Who are Spike’s parents?” into the Unanswered Questions file, alongside “What happened to Applejack’s parents?” and “Why do Terramar’s parents live apart?”
 
Basically, these are Serious Questions the writers deliberately leave unanswered so that parents can discuss them with the target audience. Frustrating for those of us who aren’t part of the target audience, but hey, that’s what fanfics are for.
