Having lived in run down places like this, that plank of wood is likely part of a wall of the ceiling that either simply was never put in or fell off.
Honestly, the thing that bothers me the most are those stains on the mattress.
From what we’ve seen of this world, the zombie apocalypse would end in an hour or so with a mountain of head-shot zombies so everyone can get back to the important business of scamming and killing each other.
Do not ask questions you do not want to hear the answers. =)
I imagine his only barricade for a zombie apocalypse.
