Description

This has happened IRL. Mike Royko wrote about one such case a year or two before he died, about a Little League pitcher, nine years of age, who was sued over a ball that went into the stands and hit someone; I have no knowledge of how the case turned out.

I’m thinking on your note of not knowing how the cases turned out. The headline of its existence is justifiably infuriating, but I’m reminded of the Kony 2012 story (reminded of recently watching the Internet Historian’s take on it) and there was the case where Jason Russell (context: the man behind the campaign) had a mental breakdown and ran naked around the streets of San Diego. The police identified it as a mental health issue but Russell was still sued by a local woman for the distress of seeing him naked.

Sounds ludicrous, but the case (it seems) was thrown out of court. One hopes the case against the 9 year old boy was ultimately too!

Talking from a British point of view - so possibly irrelevant - but I myself was targeted for damages after my dog, who I was responsible for, ran out of the front door of the house we were staying in and across the road and damaged the fender of a passing car - miraculously, the car came worse off… Anyway, point was that even though the insurance company came after me, I wasn’t 18 at that time (long time ago…) so it went through my parents. Eventually. The insurance company had to be reminded not to go after a minor. One would assume this should be the case in America. The parents should be sued, if anyone…

I was going to go on a rant about the absurdity of the actual claim mentioned in the description… However, as an aside, as a Britain hearing people (usually Americans) sue over such things it all seems utterly ridiculous, but since moving to Liechtenstein, a country without public healthcare, it actually starts to make a little more sense. Is that fair to say, Americans?
