Rarity is pretty clearly Sweetie’s real mom. They probably just foalsat till Rarity was old enough to take on her maternal duties.
I don’t think you ever got the impression Sweetie Belle looked up to her parents as much as she did Rarity… did you?
I think even the new writers forgot, as The Last Crusade had Sweetie Belle saying Rarity wouldn’t notice her going on the train to see Scootaloo’s aunts but never mentions her parents.
