I’ve been writing these notes for forever guyssss

I’m so glad I finally get to post my headcanon notes for Coco and Kerfuffle, so I hope you like it~

Coco Pommel

Growing up in a suburb of Manehattan, nothing interested Coco more than the culture of the city. She lived for the bright lights and the busy streets, even if she wasn’t one for excessive crowds. Her grandmother would regularly take her into Manehattan whenever a new play or musical hit the theatre district and the two would spend the day together. This is where Coco’s interest in the performing arts started and continued well into her adult life.

Coco’s cutie mark was gained when Coco and her grandmother managed to get behind-the-scenes at a show where her grandmother knew the costume designer. The designer showed the young filly how her work was done, and even let her play around with some scrap fabric while she gave her a mini lesson. Coco showed an immediate interest (and aptitude) for sewing and her cutie mark appeared.

In school, Coco absolutely adored extracurricular activities. She was in the yearbook committee, chess club, book club, and drama club. It was common to see the young mare running around like a chicken with her head cut off, trying to figure out what day it was and which club she was supposed to be attending after school. She tends to spread herself too thin, but always managed to make it work somehow.

Not to anyone’s surprise, Coco wanted nothing more than to pursue higher education and hone her creative skills to become a professional artist. She worked and interned in every show she could, originally starting out as a wardrobe pony. While Coco wasn’t making costumes yet, she was in the middle of actors and designers and quickly learned how theatre worked backstage.

After years of hard work, Coco got her shot as a Costume Technician. Instead of helping ponies change their costumes and prepare for shows, she was now making the clothes that actors would be donning on-stage. She took pride in her work, and it wasn’t all too uncommon for her supervisors or fellow team members to see her working late in the costume shop, hunched over a sewing machine to get ahead of their busy schedule.

In addition to working in theaters, Coco also took odd jobs and part-time temp jobs in an attempt to network, which is where she met Suri Polomare. When she learned that Suri simply wanted to copy Rarity’s designs, Coco felt torn but knew that if she refused, there was a chance her public image would be damaged. So she did what her designer said, and immediately regretted it.

Once Rarity forgave her and the two became friends, Rarity was more than happy to help Coco continue networking in Manehattan. Coco adored working with Rarity’s friends, and whenever she was needed, Rarity herself. It wasn’t long before she was hired to work part-time as a boutique manager for Rarity’s boutique in the city.

Kerfuffle

Born to a young couple who were nowhere near ready to have a child and missing her left back leg due to a growth abnormality in the womb, Kerfuffle’s biological parents decided it was best to put her up for adoption. She was put into the system once she could be discharged from the hospital after being born and hopped from foster home to foster home for the majority of her life.

Without the ability to afford a prosthetic while in the care of foster parents, Kerfuffle spent most of her life without a back leg. She didn’t let it stop her from keeping up with everyone else around her and being a rambunctious little mare.

While Kerfuffle enjoyed playing with other ponies her age, she also loved spending the day inside working on a project or a puzzle. She ended up learning how to knit from one of her legal guardians and took to it quickly. Her cutie mark appeared shortly after, when she made a bright and colorful scarf for that foster parent. While her cutie mark came from knitting, she is also very talented in anything that involves fabric. While she isn’t skilled in making clothes like Rarity or Coco Pommel, she has great design intuition.

She was regularly bullied by her foster siblings, especially whenever she was moved from one home to another. Depending on the foster parent, Kerfuffle was either a meal ticket or another special needs kid to constantly fuss over. Either way, the foster parents didn’t ever seem to care about the bullying being done. They would scold the bully, but didn’t actually do anything to stop it. A common phrase in her foster home was “just ignore them and they’ll go away”.

A few years before Kerfuffle would have been old enough to have to leave the foster system, she decided she’d had enough of hopping from home to home. She packed up her few possessions and ran off in the middle of the night, never to be heard of by her foster parents again. Kerfuffle was excited, knowing she could do anything she wanted and go anywhere. After awhile of wandering, she ended up finding Hope Hollow, where Petunia Petals assisted her in finding a job and a home.

Once Kerfuffle had a job, she saved every bit she could either for rent, food, or a prosthesis. She worked hard, enjoying being an assistant to the owner of the retail clothing shop in Hope Hollow. She was an older mare named Satin Shawl and taught Kerfuffle everything she had to know about running a business.

After the color drained out of Hope Hollow, many of the residents decided to leave and move elsewhere. Kerfuffle stayed, seeing no reason to leave a place that she enjoyed living in. After a few years, Kerfuffle learned that her mentor was planning on passing the buisiness down to her assitant because she didn’t have the energy to run the store anymore. Satin signed the paperwork, gave Kerfuffle the keys, and decided to move closer to her family during her latt years of life.

Even though the town had lost it’s vibrancy, Kerfuffle refused to close her shop or stop designing new outfits. She told people she still saw the color in the fabric, even if no one else could. Sometimes ponies questioned why she worked so hard when no one was in Hope Hollow, and she simply told them that she didn’t ever want to let her boss down, even if Satin wasn’t there anymore.

After what seemed like forever, Kerfuffle had saved just enough to afford a basic prosthesis. She knew it would drain all of her savings, but she was set on being able to walk with all four legs. Having known of Kerfuffle’s determination, Petunia Petals had started a fundraiser awhile beforehand. Whoever was still living in the town was more than happy to donate a few bits, and the day that Kerfuffle was going to leave town to purchase her new leg, Petunia and the others presented her with the prosthetic they had ordered just for her. The three-legged mare was absolutely speechless and offered to pay everyone back, but they just told her to keep her bits and keep making them proud.

Once color was restored to Hope Hollow, Kerfuffle designed Petunia Petal’s wedding dress and began to focus on the new crowd of ponies that began coming to visit or move in to town. Her business, just like the others, started to run smoothly once again and brought in more tourists than ever before. This gave her a chance to hire her own assistant and start teaching someone else the tools of the trade, like she was before.

Here’s a sneak peek into their relationship:

Both being friends of Rarity, it was common for Coco or Kerfuffle to hear about one another when hanging out with their mutual friend. While Kerfuffle was a designer and Coco a seamstress, the two were both apart of a similar career field.

After a few more years of living in Hope Hollow, Kerfuffle got a job offer to work in Manehattan as an assistant fashion designer for Sapphire Shores’ design headquarters (with Rarity’s high praise and recommendation). She said goodbye to all her friends, handed down her business to her eager assistant, and moved into a small apartment on the edge of the city.

In Manehattan, Kerfuffle started to meet a lot more creative ponies through Rarity, including Sassy Saddles, Pistachio, Photo Finish, and Coco Pommel. They all became great friends, especially since Kerfuffle was such an outgoing and friendly pony. They were more than happy to help her feel welcome in the big city, especially Coco.

Even though Coco Pommel was constantly too busy with work for her own good, she still made time to grab coffee or lunch with Kerfuffle to help her adjust with such a big move. The two became fast friends, helping each other with creative skills they wanted to hone, like design and sewing. The two even started a small knitting club, which on most occasions is just the two of them crafting in Coco’s apartment.

Neither Kerfuffle or Coco had even been one for dating. Between Coco’s every-busy life and Kerfuffle’s constant moving as a foster kid, the two had never really had the time to be in a romantic relationship. But the longer the two were friends, the harder they started crushing on one another. They had been best friends for years and constantly spent whatever free time they had with each other. It was common for them to stay over at one another’s house, especially if they had been staying up way too late.

By the time Kerfuffle asked Coco if she wanted to be her girlfriend, every one of their friends sighed “finally”. Their romantic relationship didn’t seem much more different than their best friend relationship, except now there were kisses and cute nicknames.

Rather than going out, Coco and Kerfuffle enjoy getting takeout and sitting on the couch, ranting about frustrating ponies from work or laughing over inside jokes. Even though they both enjoy being social and hanging with others outside the apartment, their jobs tire them out socially.
