A lot of us fans (including myself) tend to get so caught up in our favorite EqG ships/fanart/fanfiction that we forget that the show is aimed at 7-12 year old girls. IMHO, that’s the main reason romance has never been emphasized in the franchise. I mean, how would you explain in detail the circumstances that led up to Sunset and Flash’s initial breakup to a second grader?

of couse males are not developed, this is chick flick. any kind of development is for the girls. just think in shonen where all the development is for boys, romances are a joke and girls are there just for usually just for fanservice. just look naruto for example. hinata has development? not really being honest and his relationship with she has barely interactions with naruto in the official manga compared to sakura and the emo avenger. and still she won the narutobowl… for reasons…
 
the same happens here, sunset belongs to flash and twilight belongs to timber, and yet, these two girls will get more development in their relationship because friendship is the point of the franchise

I come back to it but for me the male characters are just not developed.  
flash and for me with sunset but we don’t know anything about him.
 
The only male characters we talk about a little bit are:  
spike because it is the eternal slave of twilight  
big mac the mute brother of the farmer  
sunburst the library raz of which starlight does not dare confess these feelings  
discord the strange guy who …? it’s fun  
And in the other world there is flash the heart break.

It’s a reproach I make at least half of the episodes of the show they serve no purpose.

 
I mean, fair? I guess we just disagree on this. That’s just more of the reason to NOT explore him, period. It feels like it’d just be a waste of screentime, specially since, as @proto29 just made me notice, about 90% of Flash’s character is to just serve as a love interest, and in my opinion, that’s just not a good basis for a character.
 

 
You do have something of a point, I’ll give you that, though it’s a bit… eh. Like, I don’t dislike Big Mac/Sugarbelle, to name one example, but the episode with them hooking up was really cringy at points. So like, I mean, like I said before, this COULD work, but I just can’t really be optimistic about it.
 
Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

I agree with you here. However, this doesn’t mean that Flash can’t be made important now. He has been displayed as someone that goes out of his way to help others, see good vibes and spring breakdown.
 

 
To me, this is all the more reason to explore his character. One thing you need to remember about Flash is that he’s a normal guy. He has no magic or special abilities. Sure, the same can be said of most other Equestria Girls side characters, but they all have a pronounced trait that makes them stand out. Bulk, Trixie, and Microchips (to name a few), all have that. Flash plays the guitar and has a leather jacket, so he should act like a “cool guy”. But instead, he’s awkward, cheesy, and even a little shy from what seen of him at least.
 

 
I totally get where you’re coming from here. But I feel that in recent years the show staff have been getting a lot better writing romance. The best gift ever showcased Shinning Armor’s and Candace’s relationship in fantastic way. Maud and Mudbriar’s interactions have been pretty great. But that might just be my opinion.

I think there’s an ease in your reasoning.  
We’ve been following these characters for a while, we know who they are and what kind of people they are.  
at least in the case of female characters.  
when you saw the story of the flash we only talk about him to talk about twilight or sunset.
 
summarize:  
he loved sunset but she broke up because she wants power.  
and then twilight comes along, which makes him hope for a new chance to love.  
but she leaves again (out of duty) and does not give any more news of her. (not cool)  
there a new twilight arrives but it does not have the same feeling at all to its misdirection and ends with another.  
then sunset comes back three years later and says she was horrible before and she was on a new base.  
now we wait to see if his story with sunset can be done. ( youou )
 
are character development only this limit has this. (frankly it is not yet firing a bullet)  
So it’s easy to invent relationships with characters that you follow every day and whose story revolves around them.

All of these listed facts plus the aspects of him that have been explored by the shorts that have come out completely negate your complaint about him being boring and bland.
 
Also, if you going to keep making up excuses that sensible and somehow have to suffer just replies to get some development, then it’s pretty clean as you don’t really respect her as a character, again, if you honestly that’s all it takes for her character to be automatically ruined.
 

 
You can play the “my opinion” card all you want, but that doesn’t automatically give you a right to spam any images with Flash in it just because you don’t like the character.

Okay, first of all: Yes, we both know I’m a well-known Sunset/Twilight shipper here, but while I would most certainly love for that ship to be canonized, I hold no hope of that happening now, and it’s not why I’m against Flash and Shimmer getting back together. Well, not the main reason, at least.
 
The main reasons I’m against it are two: First one being is that any romantic subplot in EqG with either Flash or Timber for the two Twilights has only been an immense detriment to the narrative. Flash literally could not have been there and nothing of value would have been lost in the first movies, and Twilight falling for him out of nowhere - seemingly because of just his good looks - always felt forced and contrived. It was clear that they were just shoehorning a cliched high school romance into the narrative simply because the setting was now high school (and maybe cause some executives demanded it? I dunno, but I used to get that impression), but Twilight’s character has always suffered because of these badly written romances. They’re always rushed, and they make Princess Twilight seem superficial, and Sci-Twi feel inconsistent during Legend of Everfree, acting like a PTSD victim one moment, then like a horny teenager the moment Timber showed up.
 
And simply put, the thought of Sunset - who is my favorite character - suffering something similar (meaning, having her characterization compromised like Twilight did) for the sake of a romance just TERRIFIES me.
 
Now, for what’s worth: Credit’s where it’s due. If Flash and Sunset ARE to get back together, they ARE at least already handling it better than they did with Twilight’s cases because they are at least showing them rekindling a relationship little by little through some shorts and small moments just like this. I still worry it might lead up to something that seriously hurts Sunset’s character, though. This factor, the build-up, is handled relatively okay, but the rest of it, if they are to make anything out of it, is another topic altogether.
 
The second main reason for which I oppose the ship is simpler: Flash is boring. He may not be AS bland as the ridiculous, cliched excuse of a character that he was when he was first introduced in the first movie anymore, but he’s still incredibly generic anyway. You bring up later that he could be expanded upon through the romance, but I honestly don’t see a single reason to be interested in him at ALL, let alone WANT his character expanded, especially if Sunset has to pay the price in some way.
 
Side note, but this is why I prefer ships like Sunsetsparkle or Rarijack ten times over something like this. Ship were both characters are well developed, and they play off well against each other, are just the best working ones in every way possible, if you ask me. But I digress.
 
As for exploring Sunset’s past through this relationship, I mean… specials like “Forgotten Friendship” already did well on the subject without needing Flash in any shape, way or form. So it’s like, sure, you could use Flash to explore the topic, but is he needed for it? No, he isn’t.
 
Now, with all that said and done: Yes, I’m well aware that with the right execution, things could work out wonderfully. It could be theoretically possible write these two getting back together in a way that explores and develop both of their characters in a positive way.
 
But given the staff’s track record with writing these “romances”? Sorry, but I can’t possibly be optimistic about it. Might as well tell me to touch fire and expect it not to burn me. So I really, really hope they don’t even try and it never goes beyond something like this screenshot.
 
So, that’s more or less it. Bottom line, I don’t oppose the ship ‘cause I’d like for another to happen. I oppose it because I genuinely think it’d be a bad idea IN terms of storytelling, given EqG’s track record with romances.

You’re looking at it like it’s a real life relationship. Try to think in terms of storytelling. Anything Twilight and Sunset could do romantically could be done as friends. It’s the reason why shows like Ned’s Declassified and Danny Phantom only have the characters get together in the very, very end of the show.
 
A relationship between Flash and Sunset on the other hand has far more storytelling possibilities. Their past fling can be used to explore Sunset’s first steps into the human world or could be used to teach morals otherwise hard to portray or even to depict Sunset in a weak emotional state caused by her past actions. As Flash isn’t very developed, the relationship can be used to explore him as a character and why he would date the then evil Sunset in the first place.

In fact, I’d go as far to say that the vague circumstances surrounding their breakup allows fanfiction writers to exercise their creative abilities…I know I’ve been considering a variety of potential story arcs while working on my own Flashimmer fanfic…
