I didn’t see it that way the first time reading the comic, but now that you brought up this point, I reread it and it might just be us seeing things, but AJ’s reactions as well as how Starlight is like “You GOT this!” (which reminds me of back when I was a shy wimp and my friends motivated me to not be afraid to flirt a little) DO kinda read like Starlight is wing ponying for AJ.
 
Bonus points because camping pretty much turns Twilight into a damsel in distress, and AJ might be the kind of pony to dig that sort of thing.

AJ at least seems to be genuine about the whole thing. Her transition from being really nervous to being excited about camping with Twilight is pretty adorable.

What the hell does Starlight have against Twilight? Starlight had to have read the question to herself before proposing the sudden death challenge. “Don’t worry Apps… you GOT this.” She knew Applejack would know the answer. For some odd reason, she wanted Twilight to suffer a penalty. Unless I am missing something and Applejack has a crush on Twilight and Starlight is wing ponying for Applejack.
