Good question.

In a perfect situation, lets pretend that I’m in charge of these two.

We can start it he same way, Spike is enamored with Rarity in a not so subtle way. He does the early level bootlicking which has an adverse effect on Rarity’s personality, as her greatest virtue is her generosity, yet her vice is greed and he’s catering to her greed (not just material gifts but his presence, attention, etc), despite her efforts to sooth it with her generosity (giving him special outfits, gems, etc).

We would come to a point like Inspiration manifestation where Spike’s generosity to Rarity is hurting rather than helping and he has to admit he’s messing up and Rarity is no longer being the pony he admired.

On the flipside we do the same with Spike, who’s vice is also greed and his virtue is his generosity, but he goes terribly out of control with his dragon hoarding. Secret of my excess is a perfect playout of events where Rarity rips into him verbally and informs him he’s going against everything Rarity herself admired about him.

Now we have those two extremes tackled, the two can now more casually interact while sharing interests, as opposed to Spike just being Rarity’s gofer, we also see Rarity occasionally stopping what she’s doing to do something with Spike.

This topic was waited until Dragon Dropped to even be addressed, meaning that the growth, of which I could tackle in roughly 3-4 episodes, took 9 seasons for them to address.

Now, keep in mind, I am aware that the basis is a kids show, so I wouldn’t do anything like suddenly have them being married or smooching or anything, but showing that a man and a woman can get through problems and establish the tightest friendship ever.

Basically, doing what my favorite hero once said:

“Friendship is like the mighty redwood; when it fills out to it’s full size, it’s beautiful and practically indestructible, but it’s got to go through a lot of harsh seasons to get there.” - Kinnikuman Suguru

It was only barely touched on and then various writers went full idiot and would either have them being rather cuddly or rarity outright abusing him, sometimes slingshotting between the two in the same episode (molt down is a prime example).

A bit of embellishment was done for this episode to get the level of things going on that the viewer could understand.

But basically, they wanted to get across how badly Rarity takes Spike’s attention for granted. Spike, meanwhile, was encountering the sensation of what it’s like being with someone of the opposite sex who shares most of your interests and has the same level of enthusiasm of those topics as you do, while also always having time for you.

This was a stark contrast to Rarity who, partly due to her ego, only interacted with Spike on her terms, often acting as if she had just come down from the clouds as a goddess incarnate.

Thus, we have the setup of Rarity suddenly realizing that, one day, Spike may stop revolving his world around her, and Rarity having to come to terms with that and act more like an actual person to him.

Well think about this, all those times Spike has had a huge crush on Rarity but Rarity almost never seems to acknowledge his crush on him and you need to remember all those times Spike had been by her side doing important tasks for but the work he does for her almost seemed unappreciated and swept under the rug to the point it feels like she had been taking advantage of him. But now that he has been seemingly distancing himself from her for another she doesn’t like it because of the fact that she’s so used to it and now she regrets it.

If anything it felt she was getting a taste of her own medicine insight of all those times she put him through and felt somewhat rather deserving.

I have some problems of how Spike was handled in this episode. Spike was constantly blowing off Rarity. He’s constantly ignoring her while she’s talking to him, walking off without letting her finish saying something, and just doesn’t seem interested in seeing her. I know he was looking forward to seeing Gabby, but that doesn’t exactly excuse him to be constantly ignoring Rarity so much. The very most he could’ve done at least was tell her he’ll talk to her later, or he needed to get going. Instead, he’s constantly blowing her off and doesn’t seem to listen. It’s seems pretty out of character of him to do that.

While I’m not a fan of Haber’s writing, this was a pretty decent episode though Haber did use the idea of a trope that involves “a guy spending more time with another girl and neglecting to hang with the other, and that girl trying her hardest to win him back until it turns out that they’re just friends and it all was a big misunderstanding” cliche, it surprisingly wasn’t as bland and predictable as I expected to be.

Overall this was a pretty good watch, so Haber …you did good, can’t say the same for the finale tho..
