I was always intrigued by that since back when the show first started, I always thought the guards were all the same copy-paste character like the Nurse Joys/Officer Jennies from the Pokemon series. Turns out the armor as a special form of magic where if you put the complete set on, it turns your coat into a different color, as Pun said, to hide your identity.
