Yeah, he’s a potentially good reformed anti-villain.

I think the concept of Ahuizotl’s reformation here could have worked better, pretty much the execution of it needs some work and needs a bit more info to make this properly work.

Personally I like to think that his claim to bring the extreme heat to the basin was just a ploy in hopes of scaring off adventurers. You know like how we used nukes to try to scare off Russia during the cold war. It didn’t really work out like intended.
 
Though one thought I have heard is that Ahuizotl or perhaps some other species of creature in the basin, isn’t capable of reproduction at the areas normal temperature and that raising the heat would have actually made it possible for them to breed. Which in that circumstance, Ahuizotl is actually trying to help one of the creatures he is a guardian of, which would have been cool.
 
Too bad, the writers decided to drop this bombshell in the last season without ever explaining all Ahuizotl’s actions.

I can respect that point of view, but personally, the previously established canon seemed kind of stupid, so I don’t really mind. It honestly feels more like the writers put more thought into this episode than some of the previous Daring Do episodes.

Uh, no. Nowhere in “Daring Don’t” is it shown that anyone is in favor of what Ahuizotl was doing. He’s doing it simply because he’s evil. And thw reason why the Princesses didn’t bother to step in is because they are completely and utterly useless whenever a crosis comes up. This has been true from the very beginning.

We don’t likw it due to the writer not bothering to do their research before they wrote this episode. It’s yet another writer retconning previously established canon just so they can have an excuse to pull a reformation out of their ass to justify the stupid sub-plot throughout the season.

It was probably not just his job that was on the line, but his life as well.

The book in Read It and Weep was written from Daring Do’s perspective, so I wouldn’t say that this is a continuity error.

The book was written by Daring Do, so that’s probably the reason.

It really does. I mean, there’s still obscurity over when or why Garble took a liking to the beatnik getup and bongos, but I can imagine circumstances where it makes sense.
 
Here… the only plausible circumstances involve the Truth Talisman not doing its basic function, and that just pushes “Daring Doubt” further into the ground.

Well, it makes the episode “Sweet and Smokey” look better by comparison.

Maybe he was hoping the heat would keep out thieves? IDK, the Daring Do episodes already require a bit of mental gymnastics to make sense, so I’m willing to ignore a few contradictions.

The reason they don’t like it because it frankly doesn’t make sense. If he truly is a “guardian of the ruins”, why would he have out-of-book dialogue like this?

Its fine if you do. My only problem with it is that I wish he could have explained his actions from previous adventures in which the writer for the episode clearly didn’t do research about.

This was the first Daring Do episode I really liked since the original. The explanation they give for Ahuizotl actually makes more sense to me than his original characterization. It’s kind of disappointing that so few others seem to like it.

Yes, Ahuizotl. I can blame you.
 
A good backstory shouldn’t depend on what you hope the audience forgot.

Even if Daring Do was in the past a part of that organisation, didn’t Bon Bon explain that the Agency was shut down a few years ago? If that’s the case, Daring is still most likely not acting on orders from Celestia, so they’re not involved with her rivalry with Ahuizotl.

I’m glad someone brought this up. That was a brilliantly done twist I thought, after I went back and watched the other two Ahuizotl episodes. The twist is he was a good guy all along, and that Daring Do merely thought he was evil, right? Thing is he’s arguably never done anything evil. The first time he’s a villain it’s a work of fiction written by the woman who thinks he’s evil, and the second time he’s being “evil” his actions are unleashing a heat wave in a small valley where all the animals and local ponies seem to be supporting him doing it. It totally works that he was actually doing it for their sake rather than to be generically evil. Also too, it’s probably the reason Celestia and Luna left his schemes alone: they knew he wasn’t doing evil. Probably it’s a retcon, but it’s a twist that totally works nonetheless :D
