This is why my headcanon has some kind of afterlife or cycle of reincarnation, otherwise I think the grief would have broken Celestia after losing her friends every generation for over a thousand years.

Discord was reffered to as “immortal” by Spike in S8 which mean he cant age, however he can still die easily as seen in Discordant Harmony. The idea of Fluttershy dying might trigger emotion that also kills him like being normal. Of course this a tragic sad ending. In normal cicumstances, Discord and Fluttershy would have kids so Discord would probably stay alive to keep them company. Who knows, it really depend on how people interpret their fate.

for me seeing Fluttershy grows old,Discord can’t bear spending his immortal life alone losing the only friend that understand him,the one he cares the most so he chooses to give up his immortality just to be with her.The statue is the symbol of their undying love

My head canon for this comic is that both Discord and Fluttershy chose to be turned to stone together. They will remain untouched by time, holding each other always, and they will watch over their friends’ graves.

But they said that 2013 and it was a different writer group than when they wrote the finale in 2018. Plus, they are only people and not infallible - the show is hardly 100% self-consistent. Twilight WILL outlive her friends, it’s canon now, deal with it.
 
But if it’s any consolation, this comic can’t happen in the canon - the finale hints RD lives together with AJ, not with TS.

Headcanon: Celestia took on immortality because she knew Luna was still alive and would return some day. After Luna returned and was purged of NMM’s dark magic that was keeping her immortal, Celestia dispelled her own immortality and the two will age normally. Since the rest of the alicorns have no loved ones to wait for like that, they will age normally as well.
