Keratin is Magic.

Horns, feathers and hooves are all made of the stuff. Apparently, in ponies the substance is either a source or a conduit for magic, allowing unicorns to cast spells with their horns, pegasi to defy gravity and fly, and all ponies to hold things with their hooves.

Well, in Twilight’s Kingdom, Tirek stole magic, not just from Unicorns, but from everypony. Since then, I’ve headcanoned that everypony has a constant magical aura that surrounds their body, extending a few millimeters out from their fur that allows them to grab things non-physically (kinda like Superman’s “bio-electric aura” and how it lets him stop a plane from crashing without it being wrecked, only to a much lesser extent).
