No comeuppance for freeing 2 villains from Tartarus, 1 villain from the nether and uniting them with an idle Chrysalis. Teleporting Sombra past ALL the crystal ponies’ defenses? NOPE. Hooking up three villains with a super powered weapon? NOPE. Having the Tree of Harmony (one of his few weaknesses destroyed?) NOPE! Nearly dooming the entirety of Equestria? NOPE. HE GETS TO DECIDE THE FATE! Quality writing.

My head canon is when Discord has the audacity to suggest a millennia long petrification…

Celestia replies: “No, Discord. You tried to reform these… FOUR * REVIVES SOMBRA * … AND YOU WILL SEE IT THROUGH! You will take these delinquents to your chaos realm and do so. And should they still run amok in Ponyville after, you will be responsible for their actions!”  
Discord: “B-but! BUT!!!”  
Celestia: “No buts! Reap what you sow!”  
Discord: “Fine…” * snaps a defiant group of villains away *  
AFTER THE CREDITS  

This way Discord finally gets some lasting consequences for continuing to screw with everyone. On top of that, the villains aren’t redeemed, but it’s up to the watcher to imagine if Discord could teach them friendship.

Wow how heroic of u, because of how badly he messed up killing someone who was trying to help a friend and was willing to make up for it is so not messed up to do makes u a completely morally better rational human being…i hope u can hear the sarcasm through text. Doesn’t matter how badly he messed up nothing will make u better than him for killing him as your doing it out of spite while he did his actions in the finale for attempting to help his friends.

In my mind, I’m shooting loads of bullets through his unmagical chest screaming DIIIIIIIIEEE! BANG BANG, in reality, I’m crushing his hand in a forgivenesses. handshake with a look of hate in my eyes aimed at him.

Doesn’t give Discord a pass, endangering Equestria to boost Twilight’s confidence causes damage in more ways than one.  
Discord risking his life like that is ultimately not enough to make it up for his plan. It ultimately caused the mess his plan had done from not getting any worse. Not fully make up for it.  
His chaotic nature doesn’t give him a pass though, in fact what would have him try to be good more is him facing actual consequences for his actions. Making him know this is NOT a good thing to do, that’s what punishments are often for.  
Having someone do something bad but not truly face consequences for what they done would only encourage that behavior, regardless if his “heart was in the right place”.
 
At least don’t let him get his magic back until he earns everyone’s trust back. His plan obviously would damage everyone’s trust in him there with how he did this behind their backs.

Doesn’t make this ok though.  
That is like deliberately causing a huge mess that could hurt someone and say “Its fine, I had good intentions.”.  
In fact, many villains in media had their hearts in the right place(or believing they are right) while willing to do harmful stuff to people to reach that goal. And they ended up facing repercussions usually.

What happened in the finale was a misguided effort of trying to help twilight, he also was only forgiven after he risked his life to deflect a beam that could have killed him to get starlight free so she could free the other prisoners, he also stayed behind without any powers in what could have also killed him to help give the mane 5 and spike time to escape. Also discord does means well overall but has a hard time being good in the sense of normal beings because of his chaotic nature and to turn him to stone for that would be cruel.
