The explanation my physics teacher gave is that observation requires interaction. You can’t know a particle is there without doing something to that particle (for instance, you can’t see anything without first bouncing photons off of it) and thus, if you’re observing something, you’re not actually leaving it alone.

This is terribly written. According to the diagram, a tram observed travelling along path A should crash into man B, not man A. Also, the way the “leave everything unchanged” condition is phrased could make it clearer that you still need to observe the tram.
 
It’s still one of the funniest mental experiments I’ve seen, though.

Yes, scientists cannot explain this experiment, there is a theory that we are all in a computer game and this is a lag.  
Of course I don’t believe in it, but it’s a very funny theory.

It’s a reference to the “double slit” experiment that proves the wave nature of “particles” in physics. If you shot an electron and measured it going through only one slit, it would definitely hit someone in spot A or spot B (but not both). If you don’t measure it, the wave of the “particle” doesn’t collapse into a definite path and it passes through both slits at once, which means the waves from the particle in one slit interfere with the waves from the same particle in the other slit. This interference creates a pattern where the particle can statistically exist or not exist, and spots A and B are where the waves of the particle interfere with each other to produce places where (because the two waves are opposite and cancel out) it’s statistically impossible for the particle to exist.  
At least, for the purposes of the joke.

I think killing the person who set it up would be a bit extreme in this specific example.

The correct answer to any iteration of the Trolley Problem is to immediately quit the field to find and kill whoever set it up, because they are a murderous psychopath who will undoubtedly continue to endanger innocent lives with such twisted games. Life is not a superhero comic book; any lives lost are the sole responsibility of the villain who put them in harm’s way in the first place, not that of any innocent bystander caught up in the scheme.

Rainbow Dash is best pony, so the choice is easy. She is worth more than all of the other ponies combined.

Actually, the choices resulting would be a fairly good indicator of whether someone is an extrovert, or an introvert. If they choose the 4 friends, then that is indicative of an extroverted personality, but if they instead choose the 1 friend, then they have an introverted personality. This is, of course, assuming a complete lack of preconception, preferences, etc. But if they just have 4 ponies A, B, C, and D and lone pony F then it would a fair indicator of extroversion/introversion.
 
Which is why I would go after the single lone friend, instead of trying to multitask in making four new friends.
