I feel like people oft just find a cause as an excuse to let out their unprocessed feelings. It isn’t that they are wrong, it’s that they act like complete dumbasses because while they believe in a good cause, they don’t really care about seeing it succeed so much as they care about feeling good.

And it feels good! Getting a random artist who drew a racist pic kicked off twitter makes you feel powerful. Like your opinion matters and someone is listening. Plus all the backpats from other users.

But just because it feels good, doesn’t mean it does good, and actually fighting against racism, transphobia, homophobia. And fighting it in ways that matter? That is not a feel good thing. It’s a painful experience in frustration as you fight against people who are more powerful than you.

Unfortunately in the age of everyone having a megaphone, calls for being deliberate and measured in your actions in the name of better making progress in the things you believe read like dictatorial acts of censorship. Thus, if you tell a random angry internet user to ignore the small-fry, regardless of their merits and sins, and focus on people with actual power, all they are reading is “You are not allowed to feel what you feel, and also I am defending the person you went after”.

And as said in my original post – It doesn’t matter what things are. All that matters is how people perceive them.

Look, mate, racism isn’t cool. Not even casual racism.
But do you know what else?
When you go for random internet users who made a banter-y racially charged joke, and you do so by acting angry – That is actually really shitty praxis.
Because there was no actual malice in the person’s racist post, they don’t even process it as racist, and so when they see people acting in anger, their reaction isn’t “Huh, maybe I did a shitty thing.”, it’s “Huh, these people are assholes”, and their reaction to insistence (which will read to them as unfounded harrassment) is to double the fuck down.
You are actually priming and buttering people to be love-bombed by actual nazis and radicalized.
And speaking of! There are actual nazis out there. You know. Planning (and sometimes practicing!) acts of domestic white-supremacist terrorism. Organising marches where they shout actual nazi slogans, and then deny being nazis at all.
There are racists in power in major world superpowers.
Going after random anonymous twitter users instead of people with actual power who can in fact practice racism actively hurts the cause, it makes common people less sympathetic to you (and by you I mean us, and by ‘us’ I mean ‘me’ because I’m a latino and every time racism is made more popular by well-intentioned activists acting stupid I am personally hurt).
If it sounds stupid – It is. People are not, in fact, rational. They don’t care about how things are, they care about how thei perceive the thing. And if your public perception is fucked, you are fucked. If people perceive you as an asshole who is ruining their fun, it literally does not matter if you are right. You’ll just be seen as ‘asshole’, and people will agree with actual terrible things just to spite you.

Famous shitpost-loving MLP artist shared (not made, shared) vaguely racist joke art because his zebra OC was in it.

People lost their shits because this is the internet and we’ve all lost our collective minds around 6 years ago.

You can find the original art as well as a good vertical slice of the drama by searching the tag ‘Applejack’s plantation’ right here on derpi. I won’t link because I have -5 patience for drama, so I taghid it and plan to keep it that way.
