Super Lurker
“Don’t go.”

She said it so lowly he almost didn’t hear her over his thundering heartbeat. His hooves trembled as he wrapped his robe over her shoulders, it was a little big on her but in this case, it would be for her benefit.

“Don’t go.”

Her hooves landed lightly on his chest and he froze, realizing he been fidgeting with the clasp for longer than necessary. He looked up into her eyes and he immediately regretted it. They glimmered with unshed tears, her expression imploring and heartbroken. Sunburst would usually cave whenever she gave him that look, but not this time. His horn glowed as he placed his final gift on her, a protection spell, strong enough to buy her some time just in case he failed.

“Sunburst, please.

Outside the cave, the rain continued to fall and the sun lowered dangerously under the horizon, casting long dark shadows with it’s dying golden light. They were running out of time.

“The others are waiting at the end of the tunnel,” he said, swallowing hard and tasting blood. “Keep walking and don’t turn back, I’ll buy you some time.”

“Let me help you, between the of two us we can…”

“Starlight, they’re only after me, if you got involved then it would all be for nothing!

The fire in her eyes disappeared as the tears finally ran down her gloomy face. His anger disappeared just as quickly and he reached out to hold her, kissing her forehead and murmuring words of comfort, feeling tears streaming down his dirty face. Tears of fear, regret, and love, so much love rushed forward as he held her that he felt almost invincible, and Sunburst wondered if he could hold on to that courage when the time came.

He wondered if it was possible to take the memory of her face with him to the afterlife.
