Description

Tried to draw adult Faerie and Mari as they would appear if they were in the show :) It’s a nice style excercise, and it’s fun to try and figure out how they could be designed^^ The show has certain rules and such, it’s interesting to work within its constraints (and then break some of them anyway =P )

So, for the designs themselves.

Let’s start with Faerie. In my style, he is Very Big in both height and just sheer volume of his body and mountain of a mane and tail. He’s about-ish as tall as Big Mac –but unlike the other stallion, he is not muscular. Like, at all, instead more resembling a marshmallow in both physical softness and metaphorical sweetness. His fur is curly, especially seen on the longer fur of the fetlocks, and his mane forms ringlets and curls which just amplifies the volume of it. He’s got a beard, darkening pinkening fur towards his hooves and wing-tips, a diamond marking over his horn… he’s pretty unique.

But the issue is, the show tends to not do unique very often. Even Twilight’s (who might arguably be the main of the main characters) future form is just using Princess Celestia’s model. And while there seem to be quite a few options for stallion models (standard, a few tall and thin ones, a few short and round ones, very front-heavy nobles, big mac-esque, giants, etc), I feel most didn’t fit him very well. So even though Faerie and Big Mac are quite different in how they are big, I decided to use his model for Faerie. The model itself doesn’t really portray musculature and such anyway, the show’s artstyle is very stylized.

Then I had to decide what to do with the entire rest of him. Now, he is an alicorn, which does give some leeway in how unique I could make his design. Since Cadence has proven gradient wings, I kept them, alongside the gradient hooves. For his head, there are also a lot of stallion options I can find (long, short, sloped, stop, plethora of different chins etc), but since he has his own beard anyway, I just made my own muzzle design. It’s very like Big Mac’s, but rounder and a bit longer so we don’t see other eye on three quarter view like this. He got some fancy special fetlocks too, because he deserved it. His mane is a bit too complex for if I were to animate it I think, but for here it works. Finish by adding his cutie mark, and I was happy with his show-accurate-ish-design ^^

Now, Mari. She’s also quite big, about the average height of a stallion. She is very muscular, partially due to owning and flying her own pedalcopter everywhere (the current designs on the market are so inefficient, ponies need to be beefy as heck to just get them airborne. She’s working on better designs though, just wait) and partially because she just likes it.

But the show’s models for mares are somehow even fewer than for stallions? (From what I can find just quickly, there’s standard, a few short and chubby, taller and thinner, one very model-esque, and alicorns are special. And also Nelly.) Or maybe, more mares use the standards body with individual exceptions, whereas stallion bodies tend to vary more in the background ponies. Anyway, tangent. There are taller mare bodies, but they tend to be not tall enough or are triangle-shaped models. Which does not fit Mari at all. So, I thought, since Mari is about the size of a stallion anyway, I’m just gonna use the standard stallion body for her. Does not show beefy-ness, but I think only Bulk Biceps has that in the show –like, AJ is implied to be very strong, but uses default body-type. So Mari can get away with the same I think.

I did give her a unique muzzle though, modified from the stallion standard one. The available muzzles are just so… either too sloped or too dainty or too sqaure. So I cheated, she gets to be special. Her earring and gold tooth are important for the story (loses teeth from crash-landings, earring is marrige-token) so they also get to stay. Add spots, freckles and a short mane and tail, forgoing the neck-stubble for simplicity, and she’s done! :)

For the actual artwork, this is just raster art, no vectors here as I’m not very good with them =P I just grabbed a bunch of screenshots from the show for reference (fun fact, their scale compared to each other came from when Candence arrived in ponyville via train –one of her guards uses Big Mac’s model, and the other is Flash, i.e. standard stallion model) and meshed different shots together until I got the pose I wanted and partially traced, partially free-handed it. I’m really bad at the proportions (their heads are always larger than I think) so I need to trace over circles always to get it right. But it’s still fun, and I like the result of seeing how they’d look! :D
