I miss the show so much
I guess that once we develop “true” cybernetic arms and legs and other prosthetics, people are going to experience this exact nightmare as they fear their body is literally obsoleted by the constantly-improving technology.

In the original Deus Ex game, one of the main NPCs (Gunther Hermann) resents* the player (JC Denton), whose nanoaugmentations have immediately obsoleted his old mechanical augmentations. You can read Gunther’s emails where he laments how he’s going to be just dumped to the landfill and left to rust. His entire body is mechanical, so his fears are real.

One of the prequels (Mankind Divided) also touches this topic. Golem City is one of the most horrifying places ever put in a video game. In there, you will see what happens after you get ostracized and tossed away from the society because you have augmentations.

*) This being Deus Ex, you can make him like you, it all depends on your choices. But he’s still scared of nanoaugmentations.
