I’m going to completely disregard the argument going on in the comments and answer the question on the caption.

After obsessing for 3 seasons, Spike finally gets up the nerve to tell Rarity that he loves her. He unknowingly proceeds to go too far by then asking if he and Rarity can go steady. Rarity is a bit shocked and tries to explain as kindly and politely as she can that she isn’t interested in him and would prefer to pursue stallions. The message is loud and clear to Spike and hurts like a punch to the gut: REJECTION. He deals poorly with a broken heart and Twilight is too socially awkward to properly console him. As if on cue, a villain who specializes in corruption (like the Nightmare forces or Discord) swoops in to manipulate Spike, eventually turning him evil. He takes out his hatred for ponykind on Ponyville and rants a lot about that no-good gold digger Rarity and those stupid, jerk-face stallions that took her away from him. Cue the Elements of Harmony, led by Rarity and Twilight, who present their best argument as to why Spike should turn back to good. Spike weakens long enough so that the Elements can be used on him, and bam. Problem solved. Spike writes an apologetic friendship letter to Celestia, is forgiven by his friends and the episode ends.

You haven’t disproven a thing, all you’ve done is act like you know what you’re talking about.

I just checked the transcript to Dragon Quest, and nowhere does anyone say that young dragons are flown around by their mothers. There’s a taunt about it, and that’s it. Dragons ARE loners, aside from during their periodic migrations, even if they are cared for during their infancy, which hasn’t been stated for sure one way or another.

As for how it’s ‘meant’ to happen, you don’t know that either. You’re filling the gaps with headcanon, and even that fails to adequately explain what happened. You can’t answer why Spike was so different in his monster form from other dragons, or why the process was reversible if it’s a normal part of maturing.

@Background Pony
Then give me a reason to believe that there is more than preference in your dislike. All you’ve done so far is continually say it makes no sense as all your arguments are disproven.

Spike’s growth wasn’t meant to reach the size, as I’ve explained a couple of times. He could also just be wingless.

I mentioned mother dragons because you said that dragons are loners. Dragon Quest mentioned that wingless/young dragons rode on thier mother’s backs during the migration. That’s how I can say young dragons grow up around ar least one other adult dragon.

SoME provided at least a little extra knowledge about dragons, and as I’ve shown it all fits with what else we’ve seen. It’s canon, that’s how dragons work in Equestria.

Also, where’s all the Spike loli?… I mean, when I search IB, not here… That’s probably an odd occurence, but whatever. :)

First of all, don’t put words in my mouth. I don’t dislike it out of preference, I dislike it because it doesn’t make any sense.

If that bizarre growth was simply a matter of maturation, why was he so vastly different from other dragons? Heck, he didn’t even obtain wings, even at what should be full size.

Let’s not forget that you even mention mother dragons as part of your explanation, when they have not once appeared in the show.

SoME doesn’t attempt to expand our knowledge of dragons in the MLP mythos, it simply exists for its own sake.

@Background Pony
I used books because that is the only thing we know he recieved. Odds are he has other things in his possession. He did have a rare jewel that he acquired without Twilight’s or Rarity’s knowledge. The big growth/greediness was a symptom of him maturing.
Background Pony #EBC6
Conversely, Spike seems to have been unimpressed with receiving books, and seemed to have a drive t o collect certain things in the episode. He would have no drive at all to collect things he didn’t want, and therefore have no greed, and therefore no growth. If growth through greed was his only way of growing, then he’d still be a hatchling.
Background Pony #EBC6
Twilight did not realize that Spike grew a little each time she gave him a book? I find that hard to believe.

@Background Pony
I’m calling him a whiner because his reason for calling it nonsense is basically ‘I don’t want it to be that way! I don’t! I don’t!’

@Background Pony
I pulled the fiction card because you were complaining about how things that are entirely logical within the confines of the show don’t make sense. If you dislike it, that’s fine, but in the universe they created, the dragons grow through this method.

@Background Pony
No, just as an example that he has gained possessions since the day he hatched. Again, fictional, magical creature.

We know adult dragons are solitary, but we also know that young/wingless dragons are carried by their mothers. I see no reason to doubt that parents can stop their kids from collecting stuff.

The canon isn’t contradictory, and no amount of whining will change that.
Background Pony #B2D5
@candrew
You say his ordinary growth from hatching is actually the result of receiving a few books from Twilight? Completely absurd.

And dragons are clearly very solitary creatures most of the time. Other dragons would have prevented nothing.

The canon is contradictory, and no amount of defense is going to change that.

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

@Background Pony
For a normal dragon, other, equally greedy dragons would have prevented the spurt. Especially since dragons wouldn’t have to spend a bunch of time figuring out what was going on in the first place.

Since Spike is the only one to grow to this size, it could simply be a natural reaction to such a massive shift.

The maturing could be reversed for the same reason that it happened in the first place: They’re fictional, magical creature.

There is no conflict with the rest of the series, there exist perfectly reasonable explanations for everything you’ve said. To answer the one you haven’t asked yet, Spike grew from the day he hatched because he owns more stuff now than he did then, even if its all birthday books from Twilight.

You are entirely within your rights to dislike the idea behind dragon growth, but it is canon and there is no real reason to disbelieve it.
Background Pony #B2D5
@candrew
For a normal dragon, there would be nothing to prevent a continued “spurt” to full size, and again, what about the loss of intellect unique only to Spike? And what kind of “maturing” can be reversed like that? Doesn’t make sense. And since Zecora’s explanation was within the episode in question, it does nothing to resolve the conflict with the rest of the series.

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

@Background Pony
Of course it was a growth spurt, one tied to greed and triggered by Spike maturing. That’s how dragons grow according to the only character we’ve seen with any knowledge of dragons at all.

It went too far because ponies know nothing of dragons, but Spike’s first growth spurt left him in similar size appearance to the teenage dragons we later saw.

@Princess♠Molestia
They may not have been working on post-grad theses, but they were not the “Ugh, gimme mine” cavemen that Spike was portrayed as. They were completely normal, and they certainly weren’t grabbing up every little thing in sight.
Background Pony #B2D5
@Princess♠Molestia
They weren’t acting nearly as dense as Spike was at that size.

@candrew
Spike distinctly referred to them as “teenaged dragons,” and their attitudes were nothing like greedy Spike’s.

There’s no solid explanation, it was just a self-contained contrived plot that was made without regard to logic.
