Description

I figured I would do a bit of a family lineup for Sombra, as he plays a big part in my nextgen and is the reason I went with the name ‘shadowverse’.
Here in order we have the characters: Plum Willow (oc), Baby Sombra, Starswirl the Bearded, Stygian, and Stygians mum (oc).
My Nextgen will contain several characters from the comics, but their backstories will be changed in some ways.
So my headcanon involves Sombra being pretty old and one of the first villains that Celestia and Luna faced as new leaders, before fighting Discord and having the Elements, lending into why Sombra managed to innact a “stale mate” of sorts and take the Empire with him before being defeated.
Sombra is a true half and half hybrid of a pony and a Kirin, something very rare in Equestria due to both Kirins being very elusive and secluded and their pregnancies with ponies not often being viable. I also headcanon Sunset (and thus Sunburst too, being her brother) also being part Kirin, with her mum being the Hybrid, so technically all of Twi’s kids have Kirin DNA. Sombras Kirin side is what gives him his odd looks, including the curved horn, thicker mane, and even adds to his darker colour, something not usually seen in Little Ponies.
Plum Willow is an ancient leader of the Kirin tribe, having concieved Sombra after a single night with Starswirl, who had visited her village in his travels of gaining knowledge. Starswirl never knew he had born a son with the fiery Kirin, as they had split ways when his travels continued and never met again. Plum Willow could not keep Sombra, being the leader of her tribe and having a duty to bear a pure heir in the future, so she had the child dropped off at a pony orphanage. Due to Sombras strange looks he was never adopted, and many ponies avoided him and even feared his origins.
Sombra learnt to resent others for their avoidance of him and gained a superiority complex similar to his father. He was also similarly studious and drawn to dark magic from an early age, eventually as a young colt, barely a stallion, Sombra found himself in the Crystal Empire, drawn to the magical properties of gems and their abilities of storing power and even manifesting it on their own rarely. The Crystal Heart was a wonder and great treasure to him. From here the events of the comic unfold, with Sombra attacking the Empress and then taking the Empire with him into the shadows, until his return as depicted in the show, and then a second and final return in my nextgen which I will elaborate more on in the future.
As for Stygian and his mum, I headcanon Stygian as being Starswirls nephew, their colouration and body shape is just too similar. I don’t have a proper identity for his mum, just that she was Starswirls much more average sister, having hailed from decent unicorn origins, likely within the Platinum Kingdom section of Equestria, perhaps early canterlot. She would have been a simpler pony, doing nothing noteworthy enough to earn a place in the history books beside her older brother. Stygians father is not in the picture, most likely either having been a one-night stand or having passed from the rougher life ponies of the time led.
Stygian for his part was a lot like his uncle, very studious with a keen mind, and he looked up to him immensely, in his mind there was no better pony to look up to, no problem Starswirl couldn’t solve. When Stygian realised the extent of harm darker creatures had on equestria at the time he was the one to run to his uncle and have the pillars formed, he looked for the signs of trouble and watched in awe as his hero and his associates solved the problems and made ponies lives better. But as we all know, this eventually led to Stygian being overlooked for his part in the work, reaching out the wrong way, and being banished alongside his no-longer-hero.
Starswirl of course was distant with his family, he was self centered and only concerned with his own goals and what he could achieve. His mundane sister was not worth talking about, for his mind there was nothing to talk of. Stygian was not much better, the work he did for the pillars was a means to an end, a way to boost his own power and standing. Starswirl in his time did a lot to help ponies, but for the type of pony he was that help was always the secondary goal. It wouldn’t be until Starswirls return in canon, and what he learnt from Twilight and her friends, that he would see how wrong he had been.
