Of course, this happens in the horror that is the Newborn Cuties… and it’s also the Newborn Cuties shorts that introduce us to Pinkie Pie’s mom.
 
Also, in her first few minutes of life she displays a wider use of magic than anybody in the whole franchise outside the FIM princesses and Discord. Outside this one short? Well, we see a spark from her horn in the opening; that’s all the magic she ever does.
 
(Also also, if they’ve known Sweetie Belle since she fell from the sky when they were toddlers, how come meeting Rarity when they were adults everyone was like “what’s that on your head? Unicorns? Magic? The poor kid musta hit her head real hard.”)
 
So yeah, it’s as hard on logic as it is on our poor eyes.
 
On the other hand, given how many female ponies there are compared to male ponies, magic makes more sense than anything else, outside Tales and FIM.

I have a headcanon that this is how unicorns naturally give birth, but the necessity of a sustainable breeding rate for species survival made them go all Vorlon and genetically modify themselves for live births. As a result, a unicorn born by TRUE natural birth is an extraordinary occurence, often heralding the arrival of a legendary being…for good or ill.

Pony Reproduction methods over the generations:
 
G1 = Magic Mirror
 
G2 = IDK
 
G3 = RAINBOWS
 
G4 = Implied Live Birth

Rainbows mate to produce babbies.
