I’d get a set, but it’s more for the sake of completion. Eventually, they’ll get down to the likes of Pokey Pierce and Ninja Mulia Mild, and then we’ll REALLY know they’ve run the toyline into the ground…

Eh. I’ll get one of them for sure, but it’s nothing amazing.

Not quite. It’s the way they ship these things in cases. In a case of four, for example, three of them will be the set with the Cakes, Nurse Redheart, and Pinkie, with the other one being the Elements of Harmony Friends one. With the smaller ones, there will be 4 of one set, three of another, and 1 of the last, and so on. Same thing they do with Transformers.

It’s not copyright, it’s trademark. In general, trademarking a name means you’re the only one who gets to (legally) use that name on merchandise of that general type. Copyright infringement isn’t considered a particularly serious offense and the potential penalties are fairly low; that’s a big part of why most companies don’t care about fanart, since original art of copyrighted characters could only be pursued at the copyright level. Trademark violations carry much larger penalties, so the lawyers start barking if someone is making little plastic toys that have the same name as your little plastic toys; that’s why Hashbro’s 3D printer Ponies got stepped on.

Any name that is different from the show (like adding dazzle to everything) is to avoid copyright.

I have no idea why Hasbro called him Snailsquirm.

The names sound wrong. The Snap could be a cute family name, like the idea that Sweetie Belle’s family name is Belle. Rarity Belle sounds cool. Anything Squirm sounds odd.

That’s what I’m going with; these are their real names, but their real names are orful so they go by Snips and Snails. Seriously, “Snailsquirm” sounds like the “Unauthorized XXX Parody” name for him/her. Come to think of it, this sculpt looks like it came from a porn parody; as soon as this set drops, I expect us to be flooded with pics of these two leering at other toys being perverted.

It’s still generally true that each set has one main character, but Hasbro’s taking some chances with the latest sets; in addition to the one pictured, in which the included ponies have a total of (I think) two lines, there’s the set with all minor characters (Cheerilee, Twist, Silver Spoon, and Smarty Pants), and the Cake family set with one main character (Pinkie Pie) out of six included ponies.
