I’m kind of conflicted on this, honestly. I don’t know If I should root for Veemon for being awesome, or hate him for doing this to Spike.

Or the dub simply anglicizes the names according to the Japanese pronunciation rather than what they actually say.

They called Gargomon, “Gargomon” because in Japanese, Galgomon is pronounced “Gargomon”, the Japanese tend to switch sounds with L and R.

Rather than Horusmon, they called him Halsemon, because in Japanese, Holsmon is pronounced, “Halsemon”, when they’re actually saying “Horusmon”, in “Engrish” (What the JoJo fans refer to a Japanese-accented English).

They also change the names of all Digimon with “Holy” in their name to “Magna” to avoid Christian references, which was 2000s standards. Real petty.

Adding to it, changing the names is BAD because there are so many digimon.

For example, on 01 during the Metal Seadramon arc, the chosen encounter “Scorpiomon” which takes Zudomon to defeat it. Well imagine my shock when I looked up Scorpiomon and found this thing looking back at me.

That’s because the actual digimon’s name was Anomalocarimon, based off the Anomalocaris, a rather famous Cambrian life form.

Or how about when I went to go look up Gargomon.

And that’s because the green creature with gun hands is named GALGOMON, as in, Galgo, the subspecies akin to a greyhound, whereas gargo is short for gargoyle.

Another thing I don’t like about the dub is how they dishevel the names of certain Digimon moves, like MetalGarurumon, whose attack Cocytus Breath was changed to Metal Wolf Claw.

Not only it sounded generic, but the name has absolutely nothing to do with MetalGarurumon’s claws. He only spews freezing air from his throat. They could just have named it Metal Wolf Breath to sound better. Ice Wolf Claw has nothing to do with claws again. Ridiculous.

Red in Japan is reserved for a leadership role and is seen as a heroic color. Blue is akin to loyalty and duty and usually is the “right hand”, and because canines are known as being loyal, that’s generally why it’s done.

Add to it that dragons are generally seen as the penultimate form of any mythical creature and that’s why the leader ends up with one.

One thing got me out. It seems that Digimon as a franchise has a recurring standard. The main protagonist’s partner is a Dragon, the secondary a wolf or any canine creature. The main protagonist’s color is red, the other blue.

I mean you got Mikey or Takato, whose partners Shoutmon and Guilmon are dragons, and they wear red, then you got guys like Matt and Thomas, with Garurumon and Gaomon, both are canines and they’re blue.

Terriermon is based on a dog, but looks like a rabbit. So we can’t say Tamers is an exception.

Aye. The problem with 01, 02, and even 04 was that they had too many protagonists. It required each protagonist to be boiled down into a single character trait.

03 and 05 chopped down the protagonists to 3 and could fully flesh them out and make their stories deeper because each character could have two sides; the boorish brute could have a heart of gold, the stern by-the-book character could have a dark backstabbing turn of personality, and the peppy happy lady could be serious and strong.
Paulli

Hmm. The nostalgia-cracks completely forget about the flaws of the first two series. The Digimon were just talking pets for the tamers, Davis was a jerk, and the other protags in 02 are rather forgettable. Ken was the guy with a backstory. I did like the original soundtrack and the Armor and DNA Digivolutions though. This was worsened by the dub with the corny dialogue, censorship and redundant music. The only thing I liked about Veemon is that he’s cute and his evolutions are badass.

If I ever had a Veemon, I’d rather have one with a distinct personality unlike Davis’.

What I like about Data Squad is that, Marcus had the balls to just plunge his fist to any Digimon, preferring to settle a feud with his fists, and Agumon, in opinion, acted more like a brother to his partner than a simple pet.

Guilmon was also more than a talking pet, I think. He was naive, childish and grows throughout as Takato bonds with him.

Bingo, and he was just completely insufferable and get everyone into boatloads MORE trouble than they ever should have.

Yes, his digimon did a couple of important things, but usually only AFTER everyone else held the idiotball and was destroyed, or deus ex machina took effect (random egg of miracles just laying around in the kaizer’s air ship, anyone?)

How about the idea that Seraphimon and Magnadramon are LEAGUES more powerful than rapidmon and magnamon, but they don’t even fight cherubimon, they just randomly generate miracle eggs.

ugh, I really detested 02.

Digimon Adventure 02 had a lot of issues. And characterization was one of them.

I mean you had Taichi, a character that felt like an actual child and then they push you this caricature straight outta shounen-cliche land and named it Daisuke/Davis.

I’ve always disliked Vmon. Well, I hated his tamer, actually, and then there is the fact that digimon tend to act like their tamer and Vmon started acting like him and then I hated both of them.

I know it was good (as far as Digimon english dubs go). I just like to blame 02 for the little things that weren’t good like the dual voice thing for the Megas.

Frontier and Tamers were dubbed very well, and Fusion is looking to be quite decent so far.

If there’s one dub I honestly hate, it’s Data Squad. The voice acting for most characters is dry, as though the actors were just phoning it in, and there were a bunch of dumb translation errors like “BioRotusmon.”

It isn’t even so-bad-it’s-great like Adventure and 02. It’s not even bad at all, it’s just dull.

Data Squad was good, but it wasn’t don’t by Saban or Sensation Animation(renamed portion of Saban), it was by a conjunction of Studiopolis, Toei, and Disney, it didn’t have the problems of the others.
