Yeah, that’s not exactly the definition of “smart” - more like “idiot savant”.
Now, if she had the ability to learn (and understand, not just memorise) complex things deliberately, by herself, from a book or similar standard study material… Actually, come to think of it, that’s not “smart” either; that’s just the lack of a crippling learning disability.
The episode “Testing, Testing, 1, 2, 3” shows clearly that Rainbow Dash is clearly not able to learn “just by being there,” since she is unable to listen or pay attention when information is presented to her directly, in a normal, concise manner. It requires a concerted effort by a large crowd of ponies with placards, costumes, landscaping, and fireworks in order to circumvent her disability.
As I said, her inability to learn in a “normal” fashion does not reflect her actual intelligence, but it does explain her ingrained disdain for “egg-heads” and all intellectual pursuits. She must have become convinced that she was “too stupid” for such things during her early school experiences and thus rejected them as valueless in psychological self-defence.
Okay
In fact, it’s a very typical ‘smart guy’ ability. You know, that guy who never needs to study because he’s able to learn everything just by being there?
