I never seem to see ANY MALE MLP characters paired up with FEMALE SONIC characters. It’s always Male Sonic x Female MLP. (And we all know what they do off-camera. :XD: )

I wouldn’t say they’re the same, but I do see similarities to. I’m more of a casual brony, and casual Sonic fan personally.
’Shippers gatta ’ship, I guess.
Oh I know that. Some people says that the Pony and the Sonic fandom are almost equal, but both sides doesn’t accept that. After some years in this fandom and the other one, I don’t see any difference… Well, yes there is some differences, but there are few. I guess
Also, don’t forget that both fandoms likes to ship not only characters from the same fandom, they like to ship with char from other franchises. And I have see some of that, especially ships of Twilight Sparkle.
’Shipping “MLP X Sonic” is quite a taboo in both brony & Sonic fandoms which is why.
Which is kinda funny, ‘cause both fandoms are very obsessed with ‘shipping every pony with every other pony character, or every Sonic character with every other Sonic character.
(I swear I saw a SonicXEggman pic once… And no it wasn’t a parody unfortunately…)
There’s no other taboo barrier for ’shippers to cross (heck even “incest” shipping is becoming widely accepted) besides the notorious “crossover ’ship” which is a good way to upset/anger people. (Especially, with bronies who hate Sonic, or Sonic-fans who hate MLP.)
There is something called Ponify, but I see that most people ignore that when is about MLP X Sonic

while I appreciate the attempt at originality, I’m afraid that it’s still shipping with a sonic character, and thus will get downvoted
