The “ultimate goal” in art is whatever the artist decides it to be. If “satisfying the general public” is an artist’s intent, then that is the correct criteria by which to critique their effort.
In this case, we don’t really know what sampodre was trying to achieve, but the most likely assumption is that it is intended to be erotic, whether to the artist or someone else. If towards us, then it has indeed failed. Either way, critique on how it’s failed for us is the most relevant critique we can give, and generally speaking, peoples’ tastes share more in common than not, so it’s likely close to what is appropriate.
The problem doesn’t lie so much in people having a problem with alien appearances, but with natural expectation clashing with delivery. Humans are very good at identifying other humans. So good, in fact, that we often identify them in things that aren’t actually human, but kinda have similar features. This is creepy to people on first glance the same reason clowns and people with masks are creepy - they look both similar enough to a human for our brains to go ‘this one’s ok, relax’, and different enough for our brains to tell us to be on guard. The resulting mixture of signals causes an unsettling discomfort.
This type of discomfort is a natural evolutionary advantage. It likely stemmed from ancient man needing to learn to keep his distance from those who were disfigured by disease. No, it isn’t useful anymore, but it was essential to our survival and growth as a species when it developed. People who look at this expecting an alien creature probably won’t have nearly as much trouble with it. As it is, it isn’t human, but it looks human enough (especially in the thumbnail) for us to look at it as human, and thus, get ‘the creeps’.
I really can’t condemn people on either side, myself. This is an interesting image, and I like it, but I can’t deny that it
doeshit on natural, basic, instinctual things that take a lot of healthy, safe, comfortable exposure to override. This Is Horrible.
