From the artist;

I’ve recently been thinking about Calliphora and her multiple little oddities and it struck me that it’d make perfect sense for her to be one of those queens who failed her first hunt and was abandoned by her mother hive. Because if I think about the eye thing and every one of her subjects having it, it struck me that that’s something you probably can’t evolve by pheromones, but is something you’re born with. So it would make sense for her hive to be only direct descendants.
Apart from that I’m thinking that after being abandoned, she hid out in a graveyard where she started inhabiting crypts and learning to be stealthy and quiet (she’s very good at hiding and jumping out of odd places). For all we know there might even have been genuine ghosts in there and even if not, growing up in a graveyard? No wonder she’s a little loony. Maybe the more perforated legs can even be traced to malnutrition in her growing phase.
In any case it took a good while until she pulled off her first successful hunt.

I know its probs accidental but from a distance, her mane along with her ear, look like a horse’s skull. I actually thought it was that at first.

Reminds me of this painting. Although in that one there is suppose to be a skull there, just it can only be seen from the right angle.
