I’m really glad you pointed that out, because it is EXACTLY what makes the show like no other ever produced.  
Before you read this I should warn you I get pretty far out into the weeds here, but I’ve been an editor for 15 years for a large publisher and am familiar with character development.  
On to Rarity…  
Yes, she’s self absorbed, a character flaw that she is well aware of, one that her friends are aware of as well.  
But… Does the show ever use that as grounds for a joke about her? No. Do her friends ever? No. They all have flaws, and they’re all aware of them but not the obvious flaws you’ll see in “Friends” or any one of a dozen other sitcoms, these flaws are subtle ones that we see in our friends - ones that speak more about who we are than who they are. They make us personally and inwardly aware of the deficiencies we see in ourselves. Those personal self judgements and observations only grow as the series continues. What makes it so amazing is how they avoid contradicting themselves as they move through the years.  
It’s what gives these characters true depth and believability. They are by no means superficial.  
Which brings me to my next point-why there is so much sexualization of them? Hundreds of stories on Fimfic (I’ve been unable to keep from writing a few myself), and all the erotica on this site.  
A lot (though not all) is because their sexuality is the one piece of the puzzle that the show hasn’t (and can’t) address.  
These are characters in their late teens to to mid twenties (by the end of the series) a time of a more mature sexual experimentation. We know SO much about them, but in addition to everything else, this show could be an incredible study nature of sex and interpretation relationships. That’s how developed and diverse they are.  
I also suggest that it’s why most of us come here (yeah, I know) because although these Ponies are insanely cute, I never thought that animated ponies were something anyone in their right mind would fap to. I mean, really?  
But then I got to know them… yet still I resisted for the sake of my sanity. As time went on I stopped worrying about it and gave in.  
I’m sure a lot of you can easily imagine pillow talk with each of them after some amazing sex. It’s that kind of depth of character I’m talking about.  
If you’ve stuck with me this long and are being honest with yourself, you’ll see the truth in my words.  
That’s what makes your comment so great - when you say “but still” you’re addressing Rarity (if you know her) as much as you’re addressing us.  
What does all this have to do with a hot pony who has been humanized?  
I have no fucking clue whatsoever, but I’ve had some tequila a3I’ve been closed up for months because of this stupid virus and I haven’t seen my GF in a while.  
But that does NOT negate Any of what I’ve written here.
