Trying to put myself in those people,i think what they dislike is that the episode borrow some fandom meta-jokes .At this point,we can agree that we cant ignore the Chans influence on the fandom and that some of their habits can be found in the fandom .Here,the Chan habit that play its part in the problem is when they complain when another website “stole their maymay (ie :the whole 9Gag bashing/drama).So here,you have the show “stealing” the fandom/4Chan maymay hence drama aka business as usual

Oh boy. I’m trying my best not to get hype (since that leads to disappointment), but the jumping-the-shark sequence is absolutely glorious. This show has always had kind of a meta streak, and does it very well.

@Bronitarian
Of course it’s pandering, you fools. But who cares? It’s glorious and fun, and in the end, that’s what’s important in an entertainment show.
To entertain.
You. I like you.

Of course, I’ll admit to being one of those who “complains about the complainers”. I’ve been in this fandom for over four years now, and I’ve noticed that in that time, the majority - or at least the loud minority - has hardened to the point that any reference at all is considered Panda-Ring™®, which is evidently bad for some reason.

I’ve never understood what their problem is. Ever since the start of the Animation Renaissance, cartoon writers and animators have thrown in adult references and in-jokes that the primary audience would never get, but figured any adults would. It was welcomed in those 90’s shows. Why is it a problem here? Answer: It isn’t. MLP’s writers know how to do shout-outs. “Slice Of Life” excepted, there is literally no difference between the references they threw in during Season 1 (almost completely finished before the fandom even existed) and today.

Besides, this is a milestone episode. If there was ever a time and place to go completely over-the-top, this is it. Especially considering there’s a good chance that without us, MLP would have been cancelled at 52 or 65 episodes just like most other kids’ cartoons.
