Good point. The character arcs for the Mane 6 have been sporadic at best, even Twilight’s. I doubt he’d make something like Spike’s destiny a big overarching story, but it’d be a refreshing new angle for the show.

I get the feeling this kind of development would fit best in an overarching season narrative, so something in S6 or later, when maybe Jim Miller will execute his “teenage Spike” arc.

I know its just a personal prefference but, even more than growing up a little, I want him to grow wings already.

I kinda understand their reasoning for why they had to make him a dog in EQG. I don’t like it, but I understand. Its fine. But to this day I still don’t understand why they HAD to design him without wings. All other dragons have wings. The earth dragon thing is just fanon, and in most media, it usually means the creature isn’t really a dragon. No other dragon in the show, except from the one who was his own size/age (minus the tail) lacks wings. That’s really my only gripe with his character because it makes him look incomplete.

Again, I know its just a personal thing, but there’s really nothing I want more than to see him growing little wings (even if he can’t use them at this age yet)_ with the show explaining that all dragons in MLP really do grow them with age, and that what happened in his brithday was an “unnatural” type of growth that doesn’t cause true development.

Then it seems all too clear that what’s happening to him now is the same as what’s happening to the show: growing pains. What it grows into, though, is either unclear or foreboding.

Which is why I thought he would be necessary, but while the movie would’ve been worse without him, they managed to make it work without Twi bringing her friends along so I’m no longer so sure.

@Background Pony #A6C6
Right, but they weren’t following one of the older students around everywhere, so if kid Spike were to get away with suddenly being there he’d have to join the younger students.

Neither Power Ponies nor Crytal Empire explored the fact that he’s a dragon. That’s where there’s tons of potential for his character. The fact that he’s a goddamn dragon living moang ponies, and the fact that, as he grows, he’ll have to face many ordeals no pony will ever have to go through in order to find his place among his friends.

Dragon Quest started of in the right direction, but quickly deviated into a peer preassure lesson and ignored the main issue (and potential) completely. I do hope those weren’t just words and we’ll come to explore Spike’s character much more in later seasons. His character really does hold tremendous potential for lessons/adventures.

Funny thing about that… they had the Crusaders in the movie, and nobody said anything about those little kids wandering around a High School…

(I’m not picking on you with these replies, you just seem to be the only one making statements worth answering.)

Spike played exactly the same role in the EqG movie that he does in the series. We have ample examples of him being there for Twilight in her hardest moments. He pulled her out of funks twice where the fate of Equestria hung in the balance, and if it weren’t for Spike she’d still be staring into Sombra’s Door. Spike played this exact same role in the movie, being the one who was at her side at that darkest time… the night sleeping in the darkened high school library, and guiding her through her first interactions with the “human” counterparts to her friends.Spike is an important part of Twilight’s character design… a “chorus” for her to play against. It is just as true now as when the series began.

Any development would be better then leaving people unsure though. Until they answer questions like “Why is Spike with Twilight” and “What precisely is their relationship to each other” all we have to go on is just how Twilight treats him. For Pete’s sake it took 3 seasons for Spike to address Twilight as anything besides his boss.

Speaking of McCarthy, where in the world is she?

She hasn’t written a single episode this series apart from the premiere and possibly the finale, which even then wasn’t fully written by her (Thanks Larson and Sonneborn)

She didn’t even do the new Equestria Girls, it was Haber instead

Technically, the only episode that deals directly with him being a dragon is Dragon Quest (there’s also Secret of My Excess and, to some degree, Equestria Games). The other two pertained more to him being a kid or a sidekick, but I do admit I’m just waiting for McCarthy to mine a good story out of the whole outsider-dragon thing. I’m not sure what to expect from such a story, but I’m waiting for it.

Ad hominem, when I’m mocking your statements but saying nothing about you? Should’ve seen that coming, really…

@Background Pony #A77A
I thought you were asking for examples where his outsider/dragon status did play a part, not examples where it was resolved to your satisfaction. (Truth be told, I’m hoping for another dragon-related episode somewhere down the road myself, something that goes a bit deeper into Spike’s status and gives him a better reason for living with ponies than “dragons are jerks”.)

Dragon Quest

Not only was that 3 seasons ago, it was pretty okay and meant to hastily justify why Spike’s better off with ponies, which doesn’t address how he’s still an outsider.

Power Ponies

No, really guys, he totally matters. He’s not just a sidekick, honest.

Crystal Empire

Good scene, but a short one in a much bigger 2-parter. Maybe it’ll get some retroactive significance the same way demons breaking out of Tartarus did in S2: two or more seasons later.

He’s had some really good episodes, but most of them are about him as a kid or a friend rather than him as a dragon or about his destiny, with a few exceptions. Guess that’s all you can expect for a baby dragon sidekick, though.
