True. I figured that it would be based on physical attributes (e.g. Pinkie Pie is pink, Rainbow Dash is rainbow-colored), but then there are some other ponies where it seems like naming them also predetermines their special talent (see: Shining Armor, presumably Princess Luna, and everyone in the Apple family).
 
Then again, cutie marks and special talents play into the idea of destiny that I dislike so much in fiction…

Names are the one thing I cannot do at all. It’s why I stick to ponifieds usually and when I do make full on OCs, I think up dumb names that even I can’t remember, or even dumber ones like Scene Chick and Emo Lad.

Names have always been my weak point. I love creating designs, but naming them is where I fail every time. Ever since I was a kid and in every type of character. Sonic, Pony, furry, if someone else doesn’t name it for me, I struggle to look for random obscure words/names to use because I overcomplicate things too much.

Names can be quite annoying, especially if like me you want something that isn’t taken yet. It does force some creativity on you, but sometimes the name you use instead doesn’t fit the character as well.

I know that feel. I try to not pick names that were already picked before but sometimes if there’s a name I really like, I’m keeping it.

Ugh, I suck at naming things in general, but especially characters.
 
On another note, I’ve been having some struggles with my character Alexandra “Al” Roth for a while. (She’s the one with purple hair.) This is the fact that everybody seems to mistake her for a boy.  
 
 
 
Now, I don’t know why this is or how I can make it more obvious that she’s female without overly changing her clothing choices or hairstyle. Any suggestions?

And I think she looks female. But without changing her design drastically, maybe make her eyes visible? She can still have the messy bangs but I think if people could see her face a bit better they might make the mistake less often.

I can tell just fine, there’s nothing that says ‘male’ to me personally. I can only guess they assume she’s male because of the contrast to the other character - the whole bubbly girl/emo guy dynamic and all.

So is this a place for AUs as much as OCs and are names for them a topic that can be discussed? I’ve been trying to think of a name for my ponified AU (but it also has some OCs in it and mentions of canon) for awhile now, just to refer to it as, but I don’t wanna tag it (I have a gallery already) and it has two branches, pony and EQG, that connect much like the ‘real’ ones do, and it’s indeed meant to be the same world as canon, but like, the future, and the only references to it are in history books (literally) or very long lived characters discussing the past. It is very much a double to triple AU if we get into the mess that is bandfics in general. And I am aware that all of it is very weird and really only I care about it, but even just for myself to call it a name in my head or to people that I ramble on to about it, it’d be fun to have a name.
 
Just, I fucking suck at names, I said that…yesterday? I think? Well, anyway… Why am I asking then if barely anyone knows/cares about it, and I keep all my fics I’ve written/am writing locked away in Google Docs until my perfectionist brain is happy with them? idk, I want an excuse to talk about it in vague terms. Also the EQG part is like past of the pony world which is the future of the FiM pony world, yet it’s in the past of canon EQG, and it’s just a weird future-past thing. I blame time travel. I can make that excuse as I have a time traveller side character.

I guess we can talk about AUs here too (unless you want another thread specifically for that). Maybe your AU can be called the Future Band AU? The term band has multiple definitions, one of which is the obvious music based one which fits since a lot of your OCs are based on emo bands. But the word band also means the bonding or merging of things together. And since you will be bonding the original FiM Equestria, Equestria Girls, and your OCs into this, it seems rather fitting by that definition too.

I just don’t want ‘generic’ yet every name I think up is generic…

If you do it, this same board is probably the best, or fanfic, AUs tend to be in both.
